I burned an 8x media at 24x and it works! unlike CDRW it is fixed and you can't do the same. brand name is CMC, 74min 659mb capacity. this only took 4min and 19sec for a 650mb, just got this burner today and I am so excited. :)

most quality media can be burned at higher speeds, but you may get some extra coasters for your coffee table by doing that a lot.

um, this is not quality, it is generic. I have a memorex 24x media that had 3 coaster out of 10 already, and that's not good. I would never buy memorex again.

If you are burning 3 coasters out of 10 with Memorex, then you either got a bad spindle or you have some problem with your system.

FYI check the cds on other pcs before you continue burning at this speed. We have a bunch of 8X media around the house with a 16 and a 24X burner. They burn fine and work fine on the pcs burned + nice cd-rom drives. Take them to our friends place and the only work about 80% of the time.

Burning with 24X media does not cause this problem (in our case).

I think that Memorex has something horribly wrong with their factories. I've bought 3 spindels of Memorex cd-rs spread out of the course of 3 years. out of those three spindels, only one of them actually worked right. The other 2 were 80% ruined, and we tried the discs in a total of 5 cd burners, all the same result.

Believe it or not, I've bought Memorex exclusively since I've owned a burner, due to the exceptional quality. Granted, I'm only at 12x, but they have allways worked great.

It depends on what kind of Memorex media you use. If you get the "Wal-mart special" then you might have bad results. I know on the 650Meg gold one that I have used in the past has had the top peel off, making the cd worthless, the 700Meg one that I've used from a spindle has been touch and go. I had a good spindle and then I had a bad spindle where several of the cds were bad so I took the rest of them back.

I've had cd's that have worked fine from Memorex and now they don't, even though there are no scratches and other cds work in the same drive fine. If you have problems with Memorex, I would suggest using other more reliable cdrs like Fugi, TDK, IBM, Kodak, Verbatum, or Maxell. If it's important, use a better cd brand, if you don't care about the data and just want some cheap cdr media, then get whatever you can find for the best deal.

I bought a bunch of "generic" CD-R's that were rated 4x (yes, this WAS awhile ago) when I had my Yamaha burner.. Well, my Yamaha burner died (grrrr!) one day and I didn't replace it for the longest of time.. Recently, I got a Lite On 24x burner and I can burn at 24x on those same CD-R's which totally baffles me as they work perfectly (not that I'm complaining), I haven't made one coaster..

Did you just ask if blank CDR's are 50pence in the US? :) Or did you mean a 50 pack?

They're between 15 and 25 dollars for brand name retail 50 pack. So about 30 cents per disc. Generic crap discs that you might get at a computer show are probably a little cheaper, but I can't imagine them being much lower than that.

Another good brand is SmartBuy.

I got a 50 pack of these for $25CDN. They are rated at 16x, but I burn only at 24x and out of the 35 I've burned, I haven't had a single coaster.

Anyone that gets any coasters is doing something wrong. I've burned hundreds of CDs with a really bad mitsumi 4x4x24 and with a NEC 16x10x40 and never had a since bad disc, alway writing at max speed. People don't know how to set up their systems properly.

Memorez CD-R are very high quality stuff, it's almost the same as those ultra expensive Kodak's ones;)

I really never liked Memorex, i always had bad burns, but my buddy had a old 4x Memorex cd-r and i burned it on my 16x with no problems. I dont' like memorex because of the CMC dye, same thing with Imations too. I always use Fuji, Sony, or HP. All the same TY dye. I want Kodak, but there is no stores around me that have them!

my bad folk, it seem like i was just lucky. I burned a few more at 24x and it did not work but worked flawlessly at 16x which is still not bad considering it only takes 5min and 21 sec vs 24x at 4min 19sec.
so CMC=MEMOREX, what clever marketing trick! and here I was thinking Memorex being brand name was quality. This is obviously whY i was getting 3 bad burns out of 10 so far and I would not be suprised if there are more.

Memorex does not have a clue what quality control means, that's all I'll say about them.
I don't burn all that many CDR's, 16x drive no coasters yet, using Kodak Gold Ultima 80 12x, got the rebate check too:)

I use cheap MrData (50 spindles). Used to buy kodak, then realised what a waste of money it was :)

I'm just wondering how long the disc's integrity will last. You might find corrupted data after a while so I'd be extremely cautious if I were you; do some tests first.

I don't trust memorex. Had a 40x memorex cd-rom die in about 5 months of use (and it was loud as hell, too).
