You get one billion dollars, but 10,000 people's lives are destroyed. Take the deal?

Will you take the deal?

  • Yes

  • No

  • Only if the lives I destroy are posters on AT.

You get a chance to commit white collar crime to the tune of a billion dollars. You walk scotfree and with an unbleminished reputation from your crime. But the lives of ten thousand people (shareholders or small time creditors or employees etc. take your pick) are destroyed by your crime.

Most of them will either take to crime, become homeless or even commit suicide, but you walk free with a tax free billion in an offshore account. Remember its all or nothing.

Will you take it or will your conscience not allow you to do it?

Define destroyed? Do you mean financially ruined or actually destroyed?

Regardless of that, I'd do it. Being homeless in America is a lot better than having a home in some countries. They will be okay. And if not, who cares? Can't hear them from my yacht!

Also it will help curb the surplus population. Scrooge McDuck would take that deal.

You guys think you're cooler than Scrooge McDuck? I think not.

I do think, if I had a billion dollars, I'd fill a swimming pool with coins and swim in it! Physics be damned!

Do I get to choose the 10,000? I have a lot of enemies. Getting paid $1 billion to ruin them sounds like an ok deal to me.

Everyone saying no is a liar. I'll go ahead and say it. If a billion dollars in cash was laid before you, you'd not walk away because of your "principles". 10,000 nameless, faceless people being "destroyed" so your family is secured for a few generations? Please. You'd take the money. You might feel bad about it, but you'd still take it.

Altruism sure sounds great on the internet. In real life, not so much.

It's rather short sighted to deny the existence of a moral compass because you lack one, no?

“How could I have done this? I was making a lot of money. I didn’t need the money. [Am I] a flawed character?”

You are all just NPCs living in my world, giving it a sense of reality. So yeah, we can rid of 10,000 of you to enrich my gaming experience. The matrix can just generate another 10,000 of you again anyway.

No thanks. I didn't realize those were the terms before I voted YES. I wouldn't be happy with a billion if my conscience was dirty. It would make the money dirty and everything I bought with it dirty.
If I could get the money in a business deal where others suffered, I could think my way into agreement by telling myself I'd use the money to help others. Hate to say it, but it would be nearly impossible to say no to such a deal.
