You don't know who the owner is or the story behind the cash and you are sure there are no cameras anywhere in the location. What will you do?

I'd keep it somewhere safe for like a year and keep a good lookout for anyone missing it. If I don't hear anything then chances are it was dirty money anyway, so their loss my gain. If I do hear of someone missing it and I feel it's legit, I would try to find an anonymous way to give it to them.

Getting authorities involved just seems like it would open up a huge can of worms. You'd be questioned as to why you were there, why you took it etc... there's also a chance that if it was involved in a crime you're now a suspect. It may also be a taxable event to handle that kind of money, that would be enough to go bankrupt if that's the case. So yeah I'd lean towards leaving authorities out of it, but I would want to do the right thing if it's not dirty money.

If after enough time has passed I still don't hear anything then I'd start spending it. Depositing that kind of money in the bank would give huge red flags so I would pretty much use cash to buy almost anything, and then use money in the bank for bills only. Basically I would try to balance it out so it's really not obvious that I'm rich as far as the banking system sees me. Maybe deposit some of it once in a while if I need money in the bank for bills, credit card payments etc, but reasonable amounts like a few hundred. Perhaps around Christmas and my birthday.

I think a bag left unattended somewhere would be a good reason to stay away from it and notify the authorities about it because there could be ANYTHING in it.

I think this is the best answer. It's the only way I can think of to avoid all of:
  • Trouble with the police. ("I didn't even touch it!")
  • Getting a kid killed by taking the ransom money.* 🙁
  • Or Anton Chigurh (or another drug dealer's thug)
Much as I hate the campaign:

* Edit: Come to think of it, if the police weren't involved, the kid might still get it. 🙁

Keep it. You can reasonably spend a million in your remaining life just through petty cash purchases, no real need to launder it. You don't get to drive a lambo around but your life will be improved.

I'd be wary of an ink bomb or hidden camera first (this a punk?) Anton Chigurgh second, but eventually my mind would fall into the whole 'what if this were mine?' conundrum. I'm not poor. A million is chump change for drug dealers and professional thieves, odds are it's someone life savings, winnings, or maybe that's a business start up fund someone is now having a heart attack over. I would remind myself of all the people who have turned in large amounts, only to be feted with rewards and opportunities that end up lasting longer than the funds in question.

Competent authorities for me. I don't need risk over money I don't need, though bankrolling some food banks and families in need with direct cash would be tempting.

I had a dream just like this a couple nights ago. Wasn't in a bag, was in a couple of slabs on the street (dreams are weird). It was very disquieting because I was confronted by a very intimidating man. It was kind of a nightmare.

Not dirty money? Finding $1M in cash, not dirty money, would seem to be impossible. It would have to be something nefarious. Nobody takes chances with that kind of money unless they want to avoid safer means.

For search warrant purposes, having a large wad of cash in the thousands is enough to be used to justify cause for a search. (Not a conviction, just a search). Reason being the nature of the business requires cash. Thus, in the investigative phase, being "conspiratorial" is acceptable to a degree.
( I got a warrant. Not me personally, someone rented to decide to take up the biz.)

Nobody practicing legit business means is going to be using a sack stuffed with a million in cold hard cash. Not these days.

Unless it was a ransom handoff...but there's little other reason that would stop me from grabbing it.
