You ever worry your debit card will be stolen when ordering pizza delivery?

When I order pizza delivery over the phone, they ask me for my debit card number, expiration date, security code, and address which is everything you need to steal someone's account.

I worry that the employee I'm talking to has his phone on record and steals my debit card information.

Anyone else worry about this?

Use an actual credit card over a debit card. Debit cards are horrible and the protections on them are garbage and it's much harder to get your money back in a lot of cases (depends on many factors like your bank issuer, etc, not all debit cards are equal) in case of theft.

Credit cards are better in every possible way except one, if you are bad at money management and your spending habits are not kept in check, and don't pay your bills on time. Debit cards help here, but in like every other case non-trash credit cards have better benefits and reward earning potential.

Yes, that's why I have a checking account I call "internet" checking. It's for stuff like that, move money to it as needed, it usually has 20-30 bucks balance. If anyone steals that card, they get nothing. I almost never use my main checking account numbers. Frankly, I can't remember the last time I swiped it anywhere.

Also, I dont do debit transactions either, swipe as credit. I don't put my pins in anywhere but an atm, and that's rare as well.

My main checking card only gets used at ATMs owned by my bank.

I use my internet card at other ATMs

Out and about, I have my internet checking card and my discover. I leave the main at home unless I'm on a trip, just in case.

Like others have said, I use a credit card.

With a credit card, if it is stolen, you keep your money until the credit card company proves that your made the purchases on the "stolen" credit card. This is required by law. With a debit card, if it is stolen, you lose your money until you prove that the purchase was on a stolen card, then you can get it back. This getting the debit card money back is not even protected by law, it is just a nice agreement that the debit card companies have made but can change at any time.

Aren't you worried about checks? They have your name, address, bank account information, sometimes your driver's license number, sometimes your phone number, AND your signature

I've never used a debit card, never will.

About two weeks after I got my very first debit card in the mail I learned of a guy in my town who had his account cleaned out because his debit card # was compromised. I instinctively didn't like the fact that debit cards withdraw directly from your bank account so I followed the story.

In the end it took him around 6-8 months to get his money back (we're talking thousands of dollars). I shredded the debit card and never looked back.

why? who would steal your information?
You do realize that if that happened it would be very easy to track and find the person who did it?
But thank you for starting a thread where I can increase my post count!!!

this is why credit cards exist. keep your debit card in a sock drawer or something and only ever use it for the (hopefully) ~once per month that you need to withdraw cash.

same thing happened with me, but with my first checkbook, about 1-2 weeks after opening my first bank account.

stupidly left it in unlocked car in church parking lot for a week, while away for our annual service project thing. Got back, and bank account was zero. Realized that my checkbook was gone.

Eventually got it back, and even bank video images of the lady that cashed two checks to herself, signed in my name (which is not the name I use for signatures, so easy to prove). ....closed relationships with that bank, anyway.

WTF kind of banks are you people using? I've had the complete opposite experience with BOA. Between my wife and I, we've had our Debit Cards compromised 4 times over the years. Twice there were charges in excess of $1,000 in completely different states.

All we had to do was call BOA and reported the fraud charges and turn the card off. They had us look at all the current charges and tell them which ones were not ours. They refunded the money instantly, started an investigation and sent us new cards. All we had to do was electronically sign a letter saying it wasn't us. They concluded their investigation around 30-60 days and we never had to do anything else.

Well, my experience happened around 2001 so it's possible banks have tightened security and expedited fraud investigations regarding debit cards.

I still see no reason to use one, ever. I pay all of my credit card bills every month in full. Is there a debit card that gives you points or bonuses?

Why one would use a debit card for purchases is beyond me when credit card companies are paying you to use their cards.

Pretty much this and the best part is the rewards are completely tax free. How awesome is that! You spend million dollars with credit card and get back $15k-$20k. And I personally know people who get that and more every year in credit card rewards. They just charge all their business stuff on the cards.

I used to ask and get ATM only card instead of debit card because I was worried someone would steal my debit card number and use it for fraudelent purchases. But banks started making it harder to get ATM only card and would always replace my ATM only card with debit card at renewal time. I finally gave up trying to ask for ATM only card and learned to accept using the debit card for ATM cash withdrawals. I've never used my debit card for purchases and never will. To me, debit card will always be ATM only card.

I use a CashApp Visa card for that. I only keep enough money in there to barely cover what I'm ordering.

The Chase Freedom card I use for pretty much everything gets compromised almost annually. Chase seems to have a pretty good fraud detection algorithm that can pick out odd transactions. The last two times it picked out a $400 grocery bill and a $20 gas fill up and it was spot on. I don’t know how that works but it’s pretty nifty. There was one legit charge that got flagged and it locked my account but that was easily fixed with a phone call. Good to know it’s monitored.

So, I have to ask, i'm assuming you can't do anything with the card without a PIN number right? I mean I've been using debit cards my whole life, but unless you are at your bank with an ID, the card is useless without a PIN right?
Heck, I've been using debit card to pay online using authentication apps/machines for almost 15 years...
