You ever wonder how it would feel if you were a different race?

I was just reading the post about GB's decision on Affirmative Action and there are some really interesting comments in that thread. I can understand how whites may feel relieved that AA is being done away with and I can also understand if some minorities may feel a bit upset about it. However when it comes to topics about race I think you really have to put yourself in other people's shoes. As a minority its easy to say that white people get all the benefits, but thats not always true. There are many whites who are struggling just liked under-privilged minorities. However on the other side of the coin I think it should be noted that some minorities are really at a disadvantage based on their racial background.

Do you ever wonder how it life would be if you were of another race?

Well I understand your post, but no I never wonder about such things, because it disallows personal circumstance and character. Trying to answer this is like asking me what something invisible looks like. Just cant see it ;)

Not really. I personally hate it when someone gets a job not based on their skills, but on the color of their skin. It should be whoever is the very best person for the job that gets the job.

It would be cool if companies really based their hiring practices around that kind of thinking but it seldom happens. In fact its my personal opinion that its probably very rare that people get jobs based on being the best. I know a ton of idiots at my current who are only here because they have college degrees but yet they can barely rename a file much less perform some kind of useful IT function. I can't count the times I've been asked questions on how to do this or that about things that are'nt even in my job description by so called college educated professionals.

There are poor white people, rich black (or colored or African American, OK?:p) people, middle income Hispanics, etc.

I honestly wouldn't mind being born black and rich instead of white and poor. :)

Then you must hate white people because they have been favored to get their jobs just because of their skin color. Not that affirmative action is the solution...

In our Christian fellowship here at UCDavis, some of my Asian friends were talking about the kind of cultural identity crises they had had when they came to college. Whether or not it's associated with race, I do wonder what it would be like to have been born and raised in other cultural contexts. That does include the different culture of being black/asian/hispanic/whatever in a mostly white western society. That's likely a different cultural experience than a white person might have in the same society.
