Could I be involuntarily cracking secret intelligence for the US... or echelon for that matter? Like.. how do I know that I'm cracking WU's that are from a satelite? Could be a big scam.. I could be doing grunt work over here for echelon.. or the CIA, or the KGB, or Microsoft.. or somethng totally top secret.. like cracking code for the next big weapon of mass destruction.. or I might be a paranoid phzickophrenic (sp 😕 ) .... someone tell me it ain't so.
 
Actually, the reason we haven't found the aliens yet is because they know that we're looking for them.. so to keep us from finding them they've been encrypting all of their transmissions and disguising them as earth-based local traffic! :Q They're a sneaky bunch alright, but we'll find 'em eventually! 😀
 
The thought also stuck me, that was one of the reasons I hesitated to join from the beginnig, but Flossie's pm got the better of me.

One other concern I have with upcoming projects like protein folding and protein synthesis, is if these results will be made public to the scientific community or is there some greedy company taking the results keeping it secret for later commercial use?

the reason u all haven't found the aliens, is cause seti@home hasn't analyzed any of the analyzed data u've returned...

we may have already found a signal from aliens, and some computer found it, but since the ppl down there havne't checked your wu's yet, who would noe?!?!?

this is the biggest thing that turned me off seti, why do the work, when no one cares??

The &quot;cause&quot; behind RC5 is basically to demonstrate that 64 bit encryption is insecure for internet transmission if you care about privacy. I suppose commercial firms will benefit to the extent that they are able to sell more powerful encryption programs to industry, government, etc.


The &quot;Moooooooo&quot; comes from the cow icon used by Dnet--that has led to lots of cow symbolism--herds, etc.

i remember reading it months ago.
i can't remember if it was from seti or wut, but me go look now....

jsut went to the seti site, and it seems to be down... sounds like a big thing, somoene cut some cable blah blah....

anyways, from what i remember, it was something like, seti doesn't have the founding to have the latest &quot;supercomputers&quot; so the hardware they have now, is just enough to serve out the wu for everyone to analyze. But after your computers analyze the work units, there backend servers are suppose to go through them and pick out the ones that have interesting results. well, they don't have the computing power to do that right now, there just building a huge database. hopefully soon they will look at ur data.
i think i did read that off the seti site, coz i never been to any seti sites except for the berkely one, and orange kids stats site.

this statement is not true.
seti has in fact analyzed alot of the data that has been returned and when the site comes back up i will inundate you with links to the contrary🙂

mmm... steak... i like steak... but not through a straw 🙁

i think you can make seti make sounds when it finishes work units. or maybe setispy did it. then you can use that to piss off everyone in the computer lab becuase you have 100 machines finishing work units at 100 different times 3 times a day... thats one every 5 minutes! make it play the x-files theme or something.

but steak... through a straw... ugh!
