Right, so my father comes in this morning to wake me up before he goes to play golf and he says kind of off handedly yeah my computer's broken, so I figure he's kidding so I play along I'm like oh yeah whats the matter with it, to which he replies it won't turn on I'm like yeah right, what were you doing with it heh, he said he was changing the FSB in bios because it had reverted to safe mode (default multiplier and 100mhz fsb) so he changed it to 120mhz, no problem I'm thinking its supposed to be 133 I'll change it in a jiff, then he says that 120 wasn't enough so he moved it to the max (165) well I thought he was kidding, nope I go into the office find that the computer is running still, but no post black screen, cleared cmos no go, now I have to figure out what all is dead, if motherboard is gone too means I'm gonna have to tear everything down rebuild from scratch including reinstall of the OS which means data recovery from his OS hard drive. So long weekend 🙁

165FSB! LMAO. This is why some people and computers really don't mix.

hahah yeah, the worst part is I was the one who showed him how to do it. He used to be good with computers, he was the one that taught me how to build and repair when I was younger, but he kind of lost interest about 4 or 5 years ago, but I figured while I was off at college that I would show him how to fix a few of the common problems, and his computer being that it is pretty old has some problems, sometimes it reverts to bios safemode on its own sometimes as a result of not booting up properly, but I showed him how to fix it, wrote down the steps and made him do it a few times while I watched, the only thing that bothers me is the DIRECTIONS for how to do it were tacked to the bulletin board above the computer heh.

What is FSB?

Front Side Bus... You multiply the multiplier of the cpu times the FSB to get what speed your computer runs at (in his case 7.5X133FSB=1ghz)

yea it seems like i get a call every couple days, "hey uhh the computer isnt working again can you come over and see whats wrong."

stupid parents breaking their computers all the time, sucha hassle.

My trick for not EVER getting asked to fix computers is to take it all apart and leave it that way, and say I'll be back when I have time.

Funny how word gets around about that.

yeah sometimes i think my family breaks their computer on purpose too. i swear when i was using windows 98 that it didn't crash nearly as much as they're making it crash lol (i know i know, death to 98)

What I hate worse, is family members begging you to do some stupid change that you KNOW will cause problems and have you back in a few days to put it back to normal.

Take my in-laws for example. They just had to buy an LCD (simply since they look cool). LCDs are fine, but they are not for them. I set everything up and it was working just fine. My father-in-law complained that one website program he runs wasn't full screen (800x600 in a 1024 LCD and the program won't let you maximize it). I ignored him. But he has been calling, emailing, and complaining over and over again for weeks. So next time I'm in the area, I'll set the LCD to a non-native resolution just to please him. I know in 3 days I'll start getting complaints that the text is blurry. That is why an LCD isn't for them...
