when you find a retailer who does accept the coupons, you are responsible for sales tax on the retail price of the product plus any state container deposits. In California, for example, redeeming a "free" coupon for a 20 oz. beverage will cost the consumer $.20. Ounce-for-ounce, that is only slightly less than paying full retail for bulk packaging of the same product.


I'm assuming 'bulk packaging' means warehouse clubs like Costco?

How the OP made the leap from bulk packaging to paying no sales tax at Costco is beyond comprehension.
