Because 3d blu rays are side by side anyways, it's the television that does all of the converting?

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. You need a 3D-capable Blu-Ray player to play a 3D Blu-Ray. I would assume that most Blu-Ray players are capable of understanding and transmitting the 3D signals. Your display must also be capable of understanding the signal that is being sent. For example, my DLP TV only understands checkerboard, which is why I have a 3D converter box that sits between my AVR and my TV.
