Yes, that rare and elusive Shuttle branded CPU.

Maybe I am dating myself, but we use to call the entire box a "CPU". Sorry for the confusion.

First stop: Bedroom
- Empty gym bag (there are like, 15 of them in that room, I'd have NO problems finding one or two of them empty)
- Girlfriend's diaries => gym bag
- Photo albums => gym bag
- DVD/CD binder => gym bag
(all these items are directly next to each other on a bookshelf)

Second stop: Office
- Girlfriend's laptop => gym bag
- HDD swap bays from servers => gym bag (I can unlock and remove all 20 applicable drives in a matter of moments)
- Important ****** box (even though it's fireproof) => gym bag
- My laptop (always in the bag)

In short, I walk out with only two items - a laptop bag, and a half-full gym bag, containing essentially the entire lives of two people.

Everything else is covered by renter's insurance. Only data and personal ****** comes with me.

my computer and external hard drive.

not that I'm a major geek or anything, but my computer has all of the papers I've written and all of my creating writing stuff... losing all that would kill me.

I guess this thread is a good reminder :) I should really burn all that stuff to dvd and leave a copy at my parents house. if the house where my apartment is ever caught on fire, I'd most likely be screwed. I'm the top apartment in the house, on the 4th floor, and there's no fire escape... though I'm close enough to my neighbor's that I could probably jump out my kitchen window and land on their roof.

Hmmm, well my comp sucks (only a 7800GT) so I'd let it DIAF. Probably...

1. Laptop with all my schoolwork for this year on it
2. CD that has my schoolwork records on it
3. My 10 year old sister's Guinea Pig
4. My 4 year old sister's Guinea Pig
5. My mom's rabbit

Just FYI, the only reason I'm taking the animals is because I know it would bother me for the rest of my life that I left 3 animals to burn in cages where they had absolutely no chance of escaping. If they weren't in cages, then I'd probably leave them and get...

3. My mom's comp with all the family photos on it (she'd kill me if I was in the house while it was burning and I chose something else)
4. NEC 20WMGX2 Monitor (maybe)
5. Dangit I can't really think of anything. Everything else (tv, home theater, guitar, amp, cell phone) I'd just like to leave to DIAF. It's relatively crappy and not worth risking my life for.

Financial documents etc. (Big folder), photos, and one or two treasured heirlooms. The dogs are smart enough to go out the open door on the back of the house.

If the OP scenario were exact, and I was just arriving at home, my laptop would not be in the house, as it goes everywhere I go.

In that case, I'd grab the photo of my grandparents off of the living room wall, and if I had enough time, I'd grab the box that my parents "important papers" are kept in.

I have full weekly backups off-site, and a fireproof safe for all documents that I consider important. Forget the computer equipment and etc. I have some nice things, but it can all be replaced. I'm more important than my possessions.

1. external harddrive - mainly for the photographs that I have on there (note to self-today!)
2. passport - the ID that trumphs all

with these two items, recreating "life" would be much easier

Damn right. But those fireproof safes aren't really terribly fireproof, and have the nasty side-effect of often becoming unopenable after a fire - leading to potentially damaging the contents while cutting it open.

My whole list is just grabbing the documents that are irreplaceable. Most of the important data on those drives is backed up, but not all of it - but considering how little time it takes to yank them out, it's not worth skipping if I were to have the time.

We're somewhat overly concerned about this type of stuff, and have actually drilled each other on various fire scenarios. She's not quite as adept at the hard drive removal thing as I am (I take about 40 seconds overall for all 20, it takes her about 5 seconds per drive, if not more because she doesn't like to throw them even though they're nigh indestructible), so I've told her just to leave them - everything truly important is backed up in the fireproof box.

I've seen a few safes go through fires before. They aren't foolproof, but they're better than nothing. I can't really think of any documents that are *truly* irreplaceable, at least as far as I'm concerned.
