MAPLEWOOD, Minn.? A family shopping late at the Sears in Maplewood got locked in the store and then questioned by police before being let go.

Video: Trapped in Sears

On the night before his hip surgery, Anthony Brown and his wife Kathy didn't expect to be dealing another source of pain.

Monday night at the Sears at the Maplewood Mall, Anthony, Kathy and her sister Crystal were set to buy a stove, refrigerator and dishwasher when they heard the announcement the store was closing.

Making the sale

They asked the clerk if they should they come back the next day, he said no, they made the purchase, and headed for the exit.

They looked around and saw no one. Anthony, already in pain, went upstairs looking for the clerk.

Lights shut off

They tried calling out from a store phone, while Anthony tried Sears on his cell phone, but then the lights went out.

Finally, they reached Maplewood police, then, while waiting at one of the exits saw someone passing by.

Sorting it out

Police arrived, along with mall security, and a Sears representative.

Maplewood Police Chief David Thomalla says officers didn't get the call until well after the store was to have closed, and were simply applying due diligence.

Police checked the Brown family's IDs and receipts, and the Sears representative eventually let them out.

Walking from the register to the exit. The guy who rang them up apparently exited through an employee entrance/exit in the meantime, so when they went back to look for him he was gone.

Usually if you work cash you have to cash-out after your shift, which isn't a 2 minute job.

We had this happen at a store I used to work at. We had the scissor type gates that got locked with a padlock. Once you locked the gates, no one could get in or out. One of our less than smart managers locked up without doing a walkthrough. The customer set off the motion detectors and got the treat of hearing our super loud alarm go off until someone could come unlock the gate.
