I've done it before, but don't recall as I rarely buy on Ebay.

You can do it like, up to 24 hours before the close, and if you bid within 24 hours you have 1 hour to retract, or something like that.

I bid on an auction for CD-Rs once back in college. I bid ~$20 or so. Someone else bid $26, which was more than I wanted to pay, so I bid on and won another auction. Then I get an e-mail saying I won the first auction, because the other guy's bid had been retracted. His reason was the he "meant" to bid $2.60 but bid $26 accidentally. A dubious claim considering that the auction was well higher than $2.60 when he bid. He was most likely a shill bidder for the seller, but I couldn't prove it. :|
