That's a nice lens, Mike, and covers most things, but on a crop sensor it's not wide enough at the wide end. Pretty close, though. What I need is a 14-500 lens..

Ah, yea. We have some wildlife and sports photogs in here! Just another example of how being a photographer does not mean you do anything with a camera! It's shocking and annoying when people see my fashion work and ask me to do their newborn photos or birthday parties... I'm not that kind of photographer!

That NIKKOR 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 is an under rated lens.

Truth. On the D7000 it is sharp and I like the wide-open vignetting at times. This and the 35mm f/1.8 is all I use for DX.

I use the long end of the zoom (300mm equivalent) on my Fuji S6000fd camera far more often than the short end, mostly for wildlife pictures, and a lot of the time I wish it could zoom in more. I use the wide end (28mm) frequently for snapshots and landscapes as well but not nearly as much and wider would be even better especially for indoor shots. And I almost never use anything in the middle, so it would be really hard for me to pick just one SLR lens and that (and the cost) is the main reason I don't have an SLR yet, unfortunately. I'd love to have an SLR for the improved image quality, but I'd have to carry a wide lens and a big zoom lens all of the time to fit my normal usage and that's just not very practical.

There are times when I carry my full-frame body with the 17-40 mounted, and the crop body with the 70-200 (+ 1.4x teleconverter sometimes) mounted. By owning multiple DSLR's you can benefit from both ends of the range pretty nicely In general I just take the full-frame, but if I know I'm going to be shooting long shots (wildlife or sports) I bring the crop body too.
