You call canola 'oil seed rape' or just 'rape' in the US don't you?

As i understand it when they initially introduced it in Australia under the name 'rape' they hadn't bred the appropriate varieties for our conditions, so it was a disaster. When they reintroduced it, after getting the characteristics right, they called it canola instead so as to not associate it with the previous embarassment...

it comes from the rape seed.


Rape seed oil...but most people call it Canolla oil.

I'm sure calling it "rape oil" in any country isn't a great marketing plan. :confused:

i know..but when we grow and harvest it, we call it canola, and canola seed ;)

It's got the nastiest stubble (really thick and tough, scratches you legs something cruel) and a particularly nasty variety of insect life :p
