You Are Going To Leave Work Early.

Leaving early - how do you act on the way out?

  • I just leave. No sneaking, no announcing or anything. I don't care who sees me.

  • I sneak out and make sure no one really sees me.

  • I leave and greet the people I usually greet a good evening.

  • I am a raging moron

You have spoke to your manager/boss and it's OK. Early is anywhere from 2 to 3 hours from when you usually leave for the day, as well as when others leave for the day.

What do you do on the way out?

give my coworkers a heads up
spend my last half hour finishing up any active cases or passing down cases to my coworkers that I won't have time to finish and otherwise can't wait till the morning

beyond that... just the usual shit. throw on my coat, grab anything I might have left in the fridge if it's Friday, and sneak out the door trying to see as few people who might want to stop and talk as possible.

Send an email to the team mail list, the out of office mail list, and my manager with the time I'm leaving. Then just leave at that time.

I just walk out. I work in a 2 person department, one of whom is remote. If it's slow enough to be leaving early no one from other areas bats an eye. Of course I also monitor my phone and email after I leave so if something does come up I can deal with it. I read an article a while back about Travis CI, who had an open vacation policy, no time tracking, and no one took time off because they felt others would look down at them. They instituted a mandatory vacation policy. I view it that way, we're lax on time and people leave early all the time so screw what those 2 workaholics think and take your time.

im leaving early today, but i came in early too. i didn't tell anyone either, im just going to do it.

but if i'm going to be leaving early by like at least 2 hours and using my PTO to cover the hours, i usually tell my coworkers in our daily standup.

but if i worked 6-2 or 10-6, i wouldn't tell anyone that i'm "leaving early" in the first scenario since i was there all day. i might mention it to someone if they expected a meeting in the afternoon or something though.

We have people in the office that lose their shit when someone leaves early. Calling out your name when they see you walking out. Running over to someone and saying 'OMG, they left early'. Running to the office manager. Running over to your manager.

It looks like this usually;

My boss doesn't care if I leave early. And, he actually curses out anyone who runs up to him to tattle on anyone from his team that leaves early.

But, I just keep it quiet on the way out. I don't wave or say good evening or anything. Too much drama.

can't believe you're manager even puts up with that nonsense.

if I see another coworker leaving early, I assume they cleared it with management and go about my business.

unless it happens habitually and the coworker in question actually impacts my life in the process (eg: if we were both scheduled to leave at 6 pm, but every day at 5:30 he dumps all his tickets on me), it doesn't make much difference to me.

No kidding. Are you an employee or an inmate?

Usually I'll just walk out. Depending on the early-ness and the reason for the early departure, I may say goodbye to some folks and let them know I'll be out.

But yeah, nobody cares. People are leaving to go to meetings in different parts of the complex, different company locations, appointments, kids, whatever. Anybody that thinks they're the attendance police should DIAF.

I'll do all 3, depends on the situation. Normally I leave and greet the people I usually greet a good evening if I'm not going out of my way to do it unless they need to know.

I skip the light fandango
Turn cartwheels cross the floor
I might start feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd calls out for more
The room is humming harder
As the ceiling flies away
When I call out for another drink
The waiter brings a tray

Only time I sneak is if I suspect someone of grabbing you on your way out to solve a complicated problem. Not that its different when you leave at normal hours. Just annoying that some people only want your attention when you're trying to get out the door.
