I'm going to get the $250 toshiba laptop at BB tomorrow morning. It has a 1.6GHz/1MB Celeron M 420.

Notice this celeron is the new kind which is simply a Core Solo chip with 1MB of cache instead of 2 and NO speedstep.

I'm curious how its performance will compare to my 2.4GHz HT P4 desktop

I'd say it'll be the equivalent of a 2.8GHz non-HT Pentium 4. The lack of HT will hurt your multitasking quite a bit, though.
 
so what's the review on it? i wish the hd bay had holes to let heat out, but at least its accessible (may put a dremel to work on it). so is the wireless and the memory bay. this thang is off the hook!
 
Check ebay, tons of lower speed (1.5ghz, 1.6ghz) Pentium M cpus available cheap, w/2mb l2 + speedstep! Should be $60 or less ... watch out for shipping though 🙂
