Yankees fans and lots of old baseball fans will mourn his passing.

(CNN) —Yogi Berra, the baseball legend known as much for his on-the-field historic streak as his wry witticisms, has died.

He was 90.

Berra's death was confirmed to CNN by the Yogi Berra Museum.

As catcher for the New York Yankees, Berra was the backbone of a dynasty that won 10 World Series championships -- the most in the sport's history.

Born Lawrence Peter Berra, he earned the nickname "Yogi" from a childhood friend who said the snake charmer in a movie looked like Berra.

He dropped out of school in the 8th grade to help support his family.

He holds several World Series records, including most games by a catcher (63); hits (71); times on a winning team (10); first in at bats, first in doubles, second in RBI's, third in home runs and walks, and hit the first pinch hit home run in World Series history in 1947.

Berra is also known for his humorous quotes, such as "It ain't over 'til it's over," "When you come to a fork in the road, take it," and "It's deja vu, all over again."

"It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Yogi Berra passed away Tuesday night at the age of 90," the Yogi Berra Museum tweeted early Wednesday morning.

I got to see him catch a few games when I was a kid. (My dad took me to Yankee Stadium at least once per year in 1960, 61, 62, and 63.)

Not going to lie; I thought he was dead when I was a kid collecting baseball cards in the 80s.

RIP for real.

Legend. He inspired my dad to play baseball when he was a kid. He'll be missed I'm sure.

Was 15 mins late to work because I watched the clip they put together for him on Sportscenter this morning. An incredible player, coach, father, grand-father ... person. I didn't realize he was fired so many times - LOL! Another legend gone.

RIP Yogi. :rose;

Yogi seemed to be a real down-to-earth guy who had a great baseball career not to mention eminently quotable.

A couple I remember (probably not exactly):
"Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded."
"Always go to other people's funerals or they won't come to yours."
"You can observe a lot just by watching."
"I never said most of the things I said."

His record of 10 World Series championships will never be broken.

Same here. I seriously thought he died years ago! He probably would have responded with something like "You ain't dead if you're alive!"

Heard Yogism this morning...

His wife Carmen said, "Yogi you were born in St Louis, play in New York and we live in Montclair, NJ. When you die where should I bury you?"

Yogi said "Surprise me"

Not even really a big baseball fan, but I know Yogi.

He did have a great sense of humor.

RIP.

When Yogi turned 18, he joined the Navy in 1943. Trained as a gunner's mate, Yogi was part of the D-Day invasion;protect the ground troops on the beach. He also served in a second invasion on France.

While I never was a Yankees fan; you have to respect vets like Whitey Ford and Yogi Berra,

“It ain’t over till it’s over.” RIP Yogi

I saw it in the paper this morning and was just "oh no!"

There was nobody like Yogi, a true original. He was on the team, at the time to me the most colorful, exciting baseball team ever. And as the catcher, he was of course a central figure (I remember also Whitey Ford, Mickey Mantle, Phil Rizzuto). I've seen his malapropisms quoted time and again. Somewhere there must be a collection of them... He was not a clown, he wasn't trying to be funny. He had no sense of what people would find funny, he didn't think like that. Those things just came out.
"Always go to other people's funerals, otherwise they won't come to yours."

RIP
Yeah, classic Yogi.
