I read about this recently at http://www.supershadow.com/

Here's the answer they had on the FAQ:

Who was Darth Sidious' former master?
Darth Imperius taught Darth Sidious the ancient black arts of the Sith Order. Darth Sidious eventually betrayed and destroyed Darth Imperius.

I would guess either another Sith Lord or one of the Jedi. I can't think of anything that says that Palpatine couldn't be Sifo-Dyas, so it's possible that a Jedi such as Yoda trained him.

We don't know for sure yet. But a friend just told me he saw that in the original script, the character was called "Sido-dyas." Sound that one out and you have a very likely answer. ;)

Sure, it could be that Syfo-Dyas=Sidious, but why the ???
Is there anything to be gained in making it all more confusing?
The dark side clouds everything.

Count Dooku has two names because all Sith receive a new name, with Darth being the title. It's just that no one knows yet that Dooku is a Sith Lord so he has no reason to use his Sith name to introduce himself. Vader also had two names, Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader, and Sidious did, too (if Palpatine and Sidious do really turn out to be the same... don't want to start any arguments about whether or not they are truly the same person).

Sure. I mean, I doubt that's the answer, but the common belief is that Palpatine = Sidious (I don't believe it yet just because I'm a big Star Wars fan and nowhere does it technically say that they are one in the same), so there's already one alter-ego. It makes perfect sense to me that Sidous also = Sifo-Dyas. Who else would order an army of clones ten years in the past? Dooku wasn't a Sith at the time. It's not possible, since Maul was a Sith then and as The Phantom Menace says, there are only two Sith at a time.

ok, wait a min.....
You are in good company, I guess, since Yoda can't figure it out yet either, but come on...is there ANY doubt that Palpatine=Darth Sidious?

Palpatine is Darth Sidious. There is not doubt in my mind about that.

The was once.
She had her pick of the Jedi men, but none knew how to please her.
In a drunken rage, she took her light saber too the privates of men across the Universe.
It was a dark period for the Jedi.

There were at least two in Ep 2. An Asian lady, and one with blue skin . . .
