So total for this thing is

-20 (rebate)
=60 for microsoft wirless station with 4 port router and usb adapter.

Hate to thread-crap a fellow Houstonian but this seems warm at best to me. For $60 I'd rather get a brand-name router (like the Netgear MR-814) and good USB adapter (like the D-Link DWL-120) for about the same price. Just don't like M$-brand hardware.

I disagree.

The Microsoft Broadband Wireless networking is top notch, 100% highly recommended. They're actually rebadged Linksys which is > D-Link.

I have to agree with rossman. Picked up one of these kits at target some time back on a deal here. I'm using mine as a bridge downstream of my SMC wired router.
Edit: Also, when did microsoft stop being a brand name?

The home network I set up for my cousin with this Microsoft equipment was workin great until the router crapped out. When a tech support call confirmed its untimely death, MS sent a new one. What other company handles dead products so quickly?

Microsoft is a pretty decent company for it's networking gear, but it's nowhere near Netgear. But the price is pretty good with this one too, all in all a good deal.

I set this up for my sister and nephew in my sister's 4 floor townhouse condo. Main PC and router are on the ground floor and my nephew's pc and usb adapter on the top floor. Everything works great and the signal strength is at very strong. Not bad with 2 floors in between the router and adapter!

I thought that the Microsoft consumer networking gear was all rebadged Addtron networking kit. Do you have anything to back up the LinkSys information? That's the first that I've heard of that.

(It should be noted that Addtron has been around for a long time, and most of their stuff is pretty solid, if slightly generic.)

Lemme get this straight, Netgear is "Name Brand" and MS isn't? Are you high? MS Wireless stuff is some of the best around. Netgear is hit and miss at best.

This is HOT!

i would honestly trust anything from microsoft over a dlink product. My experience with Dlink over the years has been absolutely horrible. And whoever recommended the DWL-120, its not so great. It has limited range and I get better bandwith with my linksys usb adapters.

I was reading the information on the 20 dollar rebate and it came up with this stray line...

"OFFER EXPIRES February 1, 2003"

It's in the paragraph after the address and I'm confused as to why they'd put that in there. Anyone have any ideas about that?

Nope, I just heard it from other AT'ers that MS is rebadged Linksys.

Aren't you mixing up Linksys and D-Link? I remember a thread on practicallynetworked.com that was quite specific about the MS equipment being designed with D-Link...

Link on page from original post indicates that the rebate is good through June 30. Good find.

I must admit that I was thoroughly impressed by the Microsoft bundle. No, the case isn't metal like I would have liked (ah, those were the days, like one year ago), but the router is very easy to configure and I've never had to do a hard reset (pulling the plug) on this router, while I've had numerous problems with my d-link di711 router. I even had to get it replaced recently because the power supply blew on it after less than a year. Also, the MS base station works easily either as a router or access point/bridge. I get excellent reception with it throughout my apt., too.

I would consider getting another one in case I need to do a wireless bridge setup sometime. Also, I believe that you can get up to 3 rebates for this. It's the same rebate that I filled out about 2 months ago. Again, it's been that long so correct me if I'm wrong.
