I was in BB today and saw most of the Sony speakers on clearance , while most of them were not discounted much I saw
the SA-WM40 was discounted down to $127.99 from $199.00. These are really nice subs for the money. I picked one
up for PC duty. There were 5 left at my store.

Also the SA-WM20 was like $68 on clearance.

Well this is apparently still going in some stores. Finally found one with that center channel for 68 something.
I wouldn't have bothered if you hadn't posted the price of 30 cheaper than I could find anywhere else.
In case anyone cares, it looks like they aren't phasing out sony products (that's what it looked like to me since EVERYTHING was gone) the wonder sub that is the wm40 appears to have been replaced by the wm500 12" 150watts everything looks VERY similar to the wm40 except new speaker grill. other products seem to be coming in too.
Oh and my BB had a 3 speaker (2front 1 center, display for arround 60) dunno the model.

Thanks to BentValve, my Surround system if finally complete (and my wallet thinner).

Has this sub been discontinued or is it just that Best Buy and Sears both happen to be pulling it at the same time? Ours in Birmingham was completely out when I was in there last week. I've heard great things about it as well and it did sound fairly decent in the store when I'd listened to it previously. People who added the polyfill to tighten up the sound swear by it.

do you even know what your talkin about :frown: sony has some of the worst car subwoofers to date.

For 130, I would be able to pick up a fosgate 12" punch hx2 for some serious dB(spl) levels, or an elemental designs e12K for some serious sound quality and very good spl.

Well, I'm sure they don't sound good in a car, specially when it's a HOME Theatre powered subwoofer! Sony car products aren't bad for the price, but I really don't think that has anything to do with this thread...but hey, if you want to try one, go for it.

this is a powered subwoofer ( home theater )... it's not car subwoofer.

even if you bought the RF sub you'd need an AMP and box to run it

about the people above argueing about fosgate car audio verse this sub...
this sub is considered a great deal amongst home thatre forums all over the web....after you buy a box{or build} a plate amplifier and a sub......unless you spend a lot and do great research you will not be able to make something comparable to the sony

To my knowledge:
The sony wm40 has no competitor even close to it's price, if you find something close for even 3x this price then in all likelyhood you only have 2x too much money, so give it to me :)
seriously though, I've never seen/heard a sub that comes close for under $500 (as we get close to 500 yes there are some that are better, but are they "significantly" better? I doubt it)
Besides, if you want it even better, just upgrade the woofer, I seem to recall several ppl did this with great results.
It was a woofer from partsexpress, onsale for like 30 or something (Details are somewhere on that audioreview site, I'm too busy to look right now). I don't think it's still available(EDIT: at that price), but you get the idea.

It use to have a competitor, but Parts Express no longer sells the DLS $99 sub. The DLS unit (If you have one) blows the Sony away.

Yeah I was kind of dismayed to see that it was discontinued.
Are there any alternate sources for the sub?

I recommend this Sub to anyone. GREAT SUB!!!! Also if you get it, line it with polyfil. It will make the bass tight and seriously sound like a $400-500 sub!!!! Check out HT forum and search for the polyfil mod (easy). People love the sub there

Me too. Mine's still under warranty and I'd hate for anything to happen to it since they couldn't replace it. Also I was going to buy a second one.

I went to Best Buy with some co-workers on my lunch break since they needed to look for laptops. We were about to leave when I remembered this deal. I'd already checked one Best Buy and they were cleaned out - and that was last week so I assumed this more crowded Best Buy would've been cleaned out LONG before that. I go over there and didn't see one so I was walking back toward the front of the store when I saw a bunch of Sony boxes and lo and behold there was one that said SA-WM40. The LAST one and it was marked at $119. :D

Granted, my wife's now going to kill me since I just bought an A40 last week and now picked this up this week. But at this price I had to get it. I've already got some polyfill since I was previously hoping I'd get it for Christmas.
