Think "Averatec" on Steroids...

Today I went to several Sam's Clubs in Southern CA looking for a notebook. I had no idea what I was going to find, but I definately felt like I'd find something. At the third Sam's I found this:

Sharp Actius PC-MC22 Notebook Computer - $761.31

AMD Athlon XP-M Processor 2200+
12.1" XGA LCD
256MB DDR SDRAM (PC2100); expandable to 768MB
40 Gig HD (Fujitsu)
DVD/CDRW Combo Drive (Matshita aka Panasonic)
Integrated Wireless Networking (ieee802.11g!)
4 USB 2.0 Ports
SharpSync Technology (allows this unit to be used as an external HD, like "Target Disc Mode" on a Macintosh).

I had asked each person in the Computer/Electronics Dept. what laptops they had for sale. At each store they had several that were not on display. They told me what they were (usually HP, Compaq, Averatec). At the last store the guy said he may have a "Sharp" left. I was like "huh? I didn't know you carry Sharp." I asked how much it was and he said around $750 or so. He found one on the system but couldn't find the unit anywhere. He checked one more place and came out with a brand new one. He said it was originally a LOT more but the price had been continuously dropped on the system.

I confirmed on the Sharp website that it currently sells for $1399.00. So this unit is basically 50% off!!!

Sharp Actius MC22

I definately reminds me of the smaller Averatec that we see so often, but this one feels a lot more sturdy and has a terrific feel to it.

Simply put, it rocks.

You should be able to see if your local Sam's Club still has it by using the item locator on their website. The Item Number is 427600.

Good Hunting!

P.S. YMMV because 1) Sam's Clubs in general usually have different clearance prices..and they don't match other Sam's Clubs and 2) The unit is probably not actually in stock at many stores.

*EDIT* It seems most people are finding them at around $890-ish. It looks like I just got really lucky.

He already said in his post the store only showed one (which he bought) so location won't matter.

If you put the item number in on the website along with your zip code and it doesn't find anything, that means no stores have it in stock. If you change it to 100 Miles it might show up. For example, put in 90066 and you'll see that it is a valid item number.

Thanks OP,
Just picked one up at Southgate store for $761.31 + tax. Used a one-time pass and did not sign up for membership as I am not a big fan of cheap/greedy Walmart corporate culture.

I wanted an extra 10% off as the box was opened previously but rude manager would not budge as CSR showed me screen that it's losing 29%.

I'm glad someone else was able to find it for the same price...now I don't look like a liar. :)

Incidentally, I like pretty much everything about this notebook except for one thing - Sharp chose to format the drive as FAT-32, not NTFS! This is a big deal for me because FAT-32 does not support file sizes larger than 4 Gigs...so no DVD iso file backups on this computer (I have already tried and DVD Decrypter freaked out).

They also chose to partition the drive, with a C: Drive size of ~30 Gigs and a D: Drive size of ~8 Gigs (only about 30 Megs on D: for restoring the computer...the rest is free for use). I hate partitions though...but that's just a personal thing.

But the FAT-32 aspect really irks me...it must have something to do with the "external hard drive" feature of this notebook (I guess the permissions of an NTFS drive would cause issues).

I'm willing to bet that the 3 Restore Discs don't allow you to change the format to NTFS, so I guess I'll have to reformat using my own Windows disc.

Overall though, not a huge deal. :)

*EDIT* Actually, I just found out it's possible to convert FAT-32 to NTFS via the command prompt. I just converted each drive (took about 12 minutes total for both) and now I'm *really* a happy camper!

Oh, and the Fujitsu drive's Model Number is MHT2040AT SP...a 4200 RPM drive.
