Yipes!! Intels new XScale PDA processor (400MHz @ 1.0 volts)...move over iPAQ!! :)

HELLO!!!! 😀

http://developer.intel.com/design/intelxscale/benchmarks.htm

From http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com:

<< For you hard-core CPU junkies out there, this Intel site has some interesting information about the XScale processor. The iPAQ currently uses a StrongARM processor running at 206 mhz. While I thought the XScale processor was exactly the same as the StrongARM, just under a new name, the information on this page certainly makes me believe otherwise! A 233 mhz StrongARM CPU runs at 2.0 volts and consumes around 0.8 watts of power at peak. The 400 mhz XScale processor runs at 1.0 volts and consumes around 0.6 watts of power - so you're actually getting more CPU power and *better* battery life. That's progress baby! >>

$500 🙂

It ain't coming out for a while, and I can get back $500+ dollars for my iPAQ b/c they are in such demand. MUAHAHAHAHA!!! 🙂 Try to do that with a Palm😛

Hell yeah! Screw playing Quake on my pocket PC, I'll be playing Q3 thank you!

Now when oh when will Nvidia come out with something like this...

Viper GTS

umm...

we'll just have to wait and see. personally, I (still) think Pocket PC's are too cumbersome the way you run programs and stuff..

the day that they have long battery life, WHILE doing voice recognition, is the day PDA's become the most useful.

Palms on the other hand work very easily (navigation is easy, it's easy to close a program, stuff like that).

<< umm...

really, did they say anything about how fast it is, clock for clock? or MIPS figures, or MFLOPs numbers?
>>

Did you even look at the Intel link I posted? 😉 It shows the performance numbers

doh..

what am I thinking.. oh yea, I'm on a freakin 56k modem, I almost never bother to open links..

there we go, now that I let that out, I'll edit my post 🙂

now lets just hope that intel didn't just make up these numbers eh?

Hey Soccerman...

Palms suck (had one I know) and so do analog modems.

Yoshi, iPaq and 768/128 ADSL user

Wow, XScale 150MHz is as fast as a StrongARM 175MHz with a buttload less electricity! What if intel equipped it's XScale CPUs with something like SpeedStep so that during intense things it would run at 400MHz but during light usage it would go at 150MHz and lot less power? That would kick aiss! 😀

OH yeah, you want to know what? I have the best pda in the whole world. I can store unlimited memory, full color, fastest processing ever, its called my brain. Yep! Beat that!

The problem with PocketPCs' is the memory issue....they just don't have enough. I mean 32MB ROM and 64MB RAM? Thats weak. They need like 128MB RAM AND ROM. I want it to be a TRUE Pocket PC. That 400Mhz XScale processor is certainly a good start though!!

Actually, I'd want a Sprint PCS add-in so I could use it as a phone. Handspring is doing something like that with the Visor.

Call me when THAT is ready!

-SUO, Cassiopeia E-11 (woohoo!)

it seems like someone would catch on and add one of those little ibm drives into a pda, or have like an add on laptop drive, and while we're at it, why not a built in cell phone? Couldnt nokia and compaq team up? oh, and voice recognition, but beyond all else, keep things about the size of a palm Vx

yeah a fair amount of storage space would be nice, though I don't know about requiring that much (1 gig) on a small device like that.. at least, not yet 🙂

what I think they need are: more expansion slots (tough to impliment, though people DO WANT to use those for many things, like Cell Phones, surfing through a wireless connection (802.11B anyone?), a keyboard, a hard drive (or Flash memory), or for that matter, a drive like the one we were talking about before that stored 500 megs onto a small disk).

how would you accomplish all of that? good question...

I would recommend that you don't build everything into the one device, (though that would probably cause problems in terms of the amount of space the device takes up).

instead, you have the main processor, and built in RAM as well as ROM. then you have multiple expansion slots. IrDA would go unused for me (it is built in) for example, I probably would vouch for Bluetooth connectivity over IRDA, or if I lived in an area that had Microwave internet capabilities (and I just barely do, though I'm out of range so I can't recieve it at my house but it offers MUCH better speeds then Cell Phones!), I would go looking for a modem that would fit into the slot. (talk about that later)

it might be nice to include a multipurpose built in Antennae though..

then you could also have the afformentioned 1 gbyte IBM Micro Drive, or some sort of flash memory, or a device that allows you to use it like a cellphone (you'd probably want a headset, I don't think I'd want to walk around with that thing to my ear!) using the antennae and cellphone hardware built into an expansion card.

what kind of expansion slot are we then talking about? well it has to be big enough to accomodate a small drive (like the 500 meg MD like disks), and versatile enough to have enough speed capabilities for such a device..

In case you didn't know, the iPAQ can do ALL of that 😀

i still can't find a pratical use for a palm, let alone a pocket PC. what a palm can do, i can throw on paper, it's just a tad more convienent(sp...) w/ a palm... but $200? hrmm... and a pocket PC... what else would you use it for? No, don't say games 🙂

Notice: i'm trying desperately to find a good reason to save up and buy one 🙂 heheh...

ahh, an Add-On that allows for more Add-ons?

so how many, and what type, of expansions are on an IPaq currently then, without addons such as that one you posted?

Here ya go:

1) Basic iPAQ == no expansion capabilities
2) iPAQ + Compact Flash Sleeve == use of all Type I/Type II Compact Flash devices
3) iPAQ + PC Card Sleeve == use of all Type II PCMCIA cards and Type I/Type II Compact Flash cards with CF-->PCMCIA adapter. Includes internal battery
4) iPAQ + CyPAQ = use of TWO Type II PCMCIA cards at the same time, or one Type III PCMCIA card. Includes internal battery. Can also use CF cards with adapter.
