The guy works out, has lost considerable weight over the last year and a half, and follows the Atkins diet.

He went in for a full physical and was diagnosed with clogged arteries yesterday. Doctored ordered angioplasty surgery for tomorrow morning.

Good grief. :Q

He probably had them before that. Shoot me if I ever get, at the age of 36, told that my life style needs a "major revamping", because I've abused myself so badly over the years :)

Yes, I'm sure it was all the atkins... If he lost "considerable weight" I'm going to take that to mean he was a fat ass before and probably not in the best of health to begin with. Atkins might not have helped him much but I doubt it's the source of his problems. Not trying to be rude, just honest. That being said I hope it goes well for him.

I hope he does well. Atkins is a killer for most people because very few can stick with it. They shock their body one way then introduce it to another way when they cheat. VERY BAD.

it takes years and years to clog your arteries to the point of needing angioplasty.

Ask him what his cholesterol levels (LDL, HDL, triglycerides) are pre and post atkins.

Tell him to check out bodyforlife.com. Similar to atkins, high protein, low carbs. But it does not advocate eating just any type of high fat protein. My triglyceride level was way over 600. After being on this diet and workout schedule for several months it dropped under back to normal levels.

Do you work for PETA? I love misleading threads. It's already been said: It takes years to develop clogging of that magnitude.

Just plain old eating right & mild exercise every day works fine. Too many people looking for an quick/easy way out

Are you kidding? Many people cannot follow Atkins properly. I know people that claim to be on the diet, but they are cheating every day. I stuck it out for 3 months at 20g. It was easy. I didn't splurge on butter and bacon grease. I plan to get back on the wagon at the beginning of the summer.

Atkins is far from a "quick/easy" way out. Also, exercise is mandary for the diet.

Atkins licks my left one. Come to the gym with me if you want to get big AND reduce bodyfat. And I can recommend a reasonable diet, one where you won't put yourself at risk later down the road like this poor guy.

if you were on 20g for 3 months you weren't following the atkins diet. 20g lasts for 2 weeks on atkins

Realize that clogged arteries is a disease, and that only those with this disease will aggravate or advance this disease by eating diets high in cholesterol.

The majority of people will NOT develop such problems. The rate of cardiovascular disease INCREASED as the low fat craze was around for over 20 years. So claiming that a high fat diet CAUSES cardiovascular disease, instead of simply aggravating an existing condition flies in the face of simple logic.

Also, the fact that he was once fat is far more of an aggravation of this disease than the diet he followed.

It's really not that hard to lose weight, calculate how many calories you need a day for your age/build, break them down into fat/carbs/protein cal's, and stick to it. Do cardio as a mechanism to burn excess fat on your body. You don't need to be on the "Atkins" diet to know this, or that the more muscle mass your frame adds = the higher your metabolism.

Nutritional Calculator (for bodybuilders, or people interested in working out)

If you don't care about how many calories you should be taking in when lifting, then check out the Calorie Calculator. You just put in how many cal's per day you consume, and it breaks down how much should be fat/carb/protein in accordance to your activity level and body type.

Neither does Atkins, what is the point?

It's not that easy for everyone. If you have an unbalanced metabolism when you reduce your calorie intake your body will just slow down it's metabolism to compensate and you will not lose weight. As you reduce further you just get more and more sluggish and tired because your body will try to conserve it's energy to maintain your current weight.
