Yikes: Major, Significant, possibly HISTORIC Flooding in my area!

Well, been raining pretty much ALL DAY here in upstate NY (Binghamton Area). The Susquehanna River was at/near flood stage already (been that way most of the week). Now on the news I see this:

Rain will continue heavy at times across the viewing area through Sunday. Rivers are already above flood stage and will continue to rise, leading to siginificant and possibly historic flooding.

Luckily, no. I don't live near the river and am up a little way on a hill in my village.

However, many of my friends and colleagues are in low lying areas (the school district office that I work at IS in a flood plain!!!!!!)

I have a bad feeling about this......... not good for our community at all 🙁

That's kinda a stupid question. You should ask if he is on a historic flood plain. Because of human activity, flood plains are constantly being moved and created. Furthermore, the frequency of flood plain activity is increasing for the same reason.

I'm looking at buying a house and one of them I like is on a 100 year flood plain, which is a huge negative, imo. Granted I can get flood insurance for $50/month but that adds up over time (about $15,000 over 30 years).

Anyway, the last time we had a major flood here (1969?) apparently the house had water in the basement but nothing too severe. Just a major PITA. Not sure if it's worth the risk and worth worrying about everytime we get heavy rains or when the snow melts each spring.
