The Bush administration assigned some pro-business DoJ suit to negotiate a completely toothless settlement with MS. Since the 2000 election, Bush had already said he wouldn't pursue MS (admittedly, there are political overtones to the litigation). Basically, Bush wanted the case closed as quickly as possible. Since the settlement, as lousy as it is for competition, was negotiated in good faith between MS and the feds, the federal judge assigned to the case rubber-stamped it with little objection.

In short, MS won big time. However, they might still be vulnerable from civil antitrust suits from AOL and Sun. Sun particularly has a good case, but I've learned not to expect MS to ever pay any penalties for their illegal anti-competitive actions.

Wow, let's blame the bush administration for everything that has happened while he is in office. My computer crashed a few days ago...stupid bush administration. Bush must have relaxed rules on quality of computers or something and thus my computer crashed. Yes, everything that happens is because of bush. Who is this new "suit" that bush assigned to negotiate a settlement? It looked to me like the same people negotiating as always. *sigh*

His name is Charles James. He reports to Attorney General John Ashcroft. In the Clinton administration, the DoJ antitrust chief was Joel Klein.

For those who know how to read, here's a good summary of the history of the case:

Now STFU instead of talking out of your ass again.
