The Bush administration assigned some pro-business DoJ suit to negotiate a completely toothless settlement with MS. Since the 2000 election, Bush had already said he wouldn't pursue MS (admittedly, there are political overtones to the litigation). Basically, Bush wanted the case closed as quickly as possible. Since the settlement, as lousy as it is for competition, was negotiated in good faith between MS and the feds, the federal judge assigned to the case rubber-stamped it with little objection.Originally posted by: Carbonyl

In short, MS won big time. However, they might still be vulnerable from civil antitrust suits from AOL and Sun. Sun particularly has a good case, but I've learned not to expect MS to ever pay any penalties for their illegal anti-competitive actions.
