yet more codec problems...*sigh*

After mucking around with all sorts of codec packs and methodologies (seems everyone has their own preference), I finally got a codec setup that plays almost everything. The trouble is, every once in a blue moon I'll try to play something, and get the infamous green screen. Gspot tells me the files should play fine...but they don't. I think xvid is the major problem, but I play SOME xvid files just fine.

So, I once again tried to uninstall EVERYTHING, and build a working setup again. Unfortunately, even after installing EVERYTHING codec-related in add/remove programs, WMP still plays the files, and still plays them green

Windows is horrible about removing codecs. How do I get rid of unwanted codecs without reformatting? I really want this to work.

when i get the green screen problem i just check to see if theres an updated xvid or ffdshow. that usually does the trick. and id stay away from codec packs; ffdshow usually handles just about everything (though i think their ac3 decoder isnt too great). of course theres also vlc which precludes having to install codecs.

edit
sorry didnt see that second question. i dont think theres any easy way to remove them all (i ran into simiilar problems way back when i used nimo's codec pack). you could try doing a system to a point before you installed any of the codecs.
