Yet another Z-5500 Post

Here is the setup.
Audigy 2 zs connected to Logitech Z-5500 through
1) RCA analog, which works fine
2) Digital Co-axial with a 1/8inch mono rca adapter, which does not.

The co-axial in on the Z-5500 works fine with other inputs, such as the cable box, so I know that the speakers are not the problem.

I have read all the other posts and I have done some other online research along with Logitech's website and its help regarding how to hook-up the speakers with the sound card to no avail.

The audigy is configured for 5.1 with digital out only and no DTS, DD processing as suggested in Logitech's website.

I have also tried several co-axial cables, though none of the cables are labeled co-axial digital cable, which should not matter that much. I realize that audigy 2 and the z-5500 might be picky about cables; therefore, I am planning on buying a monstrosity cable from best buy just to see if it will work with that.

Another thing I have not tried is to unplug the RCA in from the Audigy while connecting the digital co-axial from the Audigy at the same time, which occurred to me as I was writing this post.

I have not been able to check to see if the digital co-axial out on the sound card is working or not, but the hardware test of the car seems to work fine. Any way I can check to see if this is working without getting a receiver?

Any other suggestions welcome, and thank you in advance.

Creative technical support says reinstall drivers in safe mode. I am too lazy to do that, since the rest of the card seems to be working fine, I doubt this is going to change anything.
I am going to get cables this weekend and maybe see if there is another digital co-axial-in I can use aside from the speakers.

Any ideas, still, appreciated.

Have you tried a yellow RCA cable (like one for video)?

That should be identical internally to a digital coaxial cable you would buy.

Yes I have. I have actually tried 4 different co-axial cables. Today I went to Walmart and spent 15 dollars on a philips co-axial digitla cable, and it came with all the orange and beautiful plastic that you would expect from a $15 cable. That did not do the trick.

I went ahead and re-installed everything after Creative's "remove all the drivers on safe mode and disable all the services" advice. That did not do the trick either. I am wondering if there is a problem with the rca mini adapter I am using. I remember reading somewhere that you had to get one line on the plug that went into the card, instead of the 2 or 3 lines. I remember also reading that this might just cause some interference since one of them would not be used for anything, but should still work.

Anyhow. I am running out of ideas here. Any help appreciated.

Maybe your mono mini-plug is taking the wrong channel. I would suggest using a stereo adapter. From what I've read the digital signal is only on one of the two channels, so there won't be interference for using a stereo adapter.

If you'd have a Logitech QuickCam on your system, that would be your problem. Same thing happens here, no digital output from the sound card and on analog, the rear sound comes out the front speakers.
There are no settings to enable/disable for digital COAX. Should work all the time.
If you do have one of those webcams, uninstall the drivers, restart, reinstall the sound drivers and that might solve the problem.
Took me 4 days to isolate this issue and I am not the only one having it.

You enabled passthrough right? You also set the speaker setup to 5.1 in both the creative drivers page and windows?

how exactly are you tryign to use a Coax off a ZS? we dont have one...
do you have the platinum setup with the drive bay attachment?

the best way to get a ZS hooked up is using the direct mode.. the 3 colored plugs..
save the good inputs for your HT or 360 or DVD player that have a true COAX/Optical line.

The ZS has a digital out. Its in miniplug form but that doesn't change things

actually it does... becasue that little plug has ALWAYS been a problem child UNLESS you use creatives speakers or their cables...

sometimes the radioshack cord works sometimes they dont... and going from miniDIN to true Digital Coax is not a very clean signal even if using the creative setup..
Coax to coax is way cleaner and less problemmatic..
or optical to optical..
just not worth the hassle.. the 5500s decode everything perfectly anyway out of direct mode.

um, I have it hooked up to a Harman Kardon AVR 435 and it works fine. Its not a miniDIN connector its a 3.5 mm miniplug. Why wouldn't it be a clean signal...its just 1 extra connection. So I guess I have never experienced nor heard of your problem.

thats the one im talkign about....
all it takes is a little forum searching and others here have had the same issues as the OP..
that miniplug on the creative cards is proprietary somesay that the radioshack miniconverter work but others have had a hard time unless they have the crative digital out plug.

Well my Radioshack converter works fine. That's all I was saying. Never heard of any problems

I have given up. I am not going to bother with the co-ax anymore. My dvd occupies the optical in of the Z-5500 and the cable box occupies the co-axial. It is going to be a hassle to change the speaker wires everytime I want to use it, anyway. Thanks for all the advice.
