I just installed win xp pro on a machine. it seems to have installed fine all the way. The network card works is up I can ping the box from itself.
However I can ping the router on anything else or access the Internet.
Here is the workgroup setup:
3 w2k machine
2 w98 machines
1 xp machine
1 Linux

1 linksys router
1 linksys hub connected to the router.
1 RR cable modem.
Using local ip address for all the machines: 192.168.1.1xx

All the other computers can see each other and access the Internet.
The xp machine cant see or ping anything but itself, and cant access the internet.
I have checked and compared all the ip settings, dns setting, etc. on the XP box with the others...it looks like all the others except node is listed as unknown. I have turned off ICS (first thing I did) but no luck...
Is there any weird setting in XP that will cause it not to be seen on the network? I will try to reset the tcp/ip stuff, but if that fails I am back to having a stand alone box...I will burn XP and go back to 2k on that box and wait for XP 1.1 :D
Thanks.

check your nic driver
check your subnet mask
double check your ip address

done all of the above.
ip address unused and in the range for the router.
subnet is same 255.255.255.0
installed the new NIC driver for the smc1211tx from smc site.

w2k and nt networking were easy to setup...XP is turning into a pain.

thanks

jaclmds:
I don't use ICS just going through the router...I went throught the network setup wizard which turned on the XP firewall I disabled it...but still had problems....
Why would just plugging in the XP machine on the router make it work? confused.
I'll take a look at the links thanks.

Networking, and Sharing the Internet involved over lapping parts of the OS' network settings. In some cases, people are capable to share the Internet, but have no functional internal network, and vice versa.

By connecting one computer to the router by itself it makes it much easier to find what is wrong with the specific settings of the computer without the interaction with the other computers on the network.

I got the same problem. My third computer can ping itself, but can't ping the router. awwwwwww
I running XP by the way with a Linksys router.

Any help will be helpful. Thinking its bad nic or bad driver for WInXP

Nic: Kingston card from Pacbell, XP sees it as Liteon card.

jackMDS:

well your advice worked! thanks...When I start the XP machine first it connects to the network without problems and everything seems to work fine...It works fine too with W2k machines on the network. What is weird is that When I turn on a PC with (8 ( and this doesn't happen everytime) the Wxp machine no longer can access the network. sometimes a relogon will fix this, other times I have to turn the w98 macine off then try the XP machine again? weird....hopefully I WILL get rid of all w98 PCs soon...move them up to W2k until I learn the "XP" crap...
thanks.
