this has been posted on the wow forums, but from the 2 or 3 threads that were on there, i don't think any of them were adressed by blizzard tech support.. now i'm not saying it's their fault.. they have tons of stuff they have to take care of, and this is a huge game, and i'm sure they're doing their best..

anyhow, so my problem is i just get random disconnects.. it used to seem like whenever i finished a quest or tried opening up a new one.. but i'm not quite sure if that's really the problem.. half the time it's when i finish a quest, half the time it's just when i'm walking around.. and it doesnt' just disconnect me from the server.. it disconnects my dsl entirely (my roommates dont' appreciate it) and so i have to reset the router..

why do i think it's the router and not my computer? because it happens with both my laptop and my desktop.. and it does not happen with my laptop at my parents house... i just spent 2 weeks at my parents house and played wow at least 8 horus a day straight, and no random disconnects.. i was on a airlink+ router using the wireless connection... at my college home, i'm connected through the 10/100 lines we have runnign through the house.. we're on a belkin router.. my laptop is routed through a netgear wireless router (but using the wire) that is in turn connected to the belkin router.. my desktop is directly connected to the belkin router..

my desktop does it all the time.. without question.. can't hardly play on it.. my laptop has done it once (because i obviously prefer to play on my desltop) so i just haven't tested it more with my laptop.. i will soon.. anyway, if you guys want to know my specs, let me know.. i highly doubt it matters as i've tried it on two computers with the same result.. also if you could tell me how to get the specs easily (ie cut and paste) i'll be happy to post them..

thank you for reading all this crap, and thanks in advance for all the help..

If you think the router is the problem try connecting to your ISP without the router. If the connection problem still exists, get a better router.

Also, I'm a bit confused... why are you using two routers?

Are you using the Netgear just as a wireless access point?

yah, the netgear is just a wireless access point, and it's basically being used as a switch for when we have lan parties.. i don't know if it's the isp's fault.. cause we have the same isp (my parents and my college house although different routing stations) i guess trying to connect just through the modem would be the next step.. or maybe i can just find a cheap router and try it out..

but does anyone else have this problem? if so have you tried anything?

btw, thanks for the replies

I have had some disconnect problems, and I also traced it back to my router.

It was a D-link. It was periodically just dropping my connection. It had nothing to do with WoW at all.

I replaced it with a Linksys WRT54GS and haven't had a problem since. This router is rock solid.

I don't know if the router was to blame either... it was probably a combination of the router and my ISP.

i used to have disconnect problems as well. it was definitely the isps fault, the modem itself was losing connection to the isp.

in my new place, my wireless card kept losing its signal and dropping the connection. i upgraded the card and the problems stoppped.

it just seems to me that this is likely to be a hw issue and not WoW related. definitely try bypassing the router to see if it stops.

it could be the router dropping connection from the modem, or the modem dropping connection from the isp.

I had same problem however it was not just in WoW but all games. I upgraded the firmware on my router

and now there are no problems at all. I would look to see if there are any firmware updates available. The

reason mine was disconnecting with games is that the router would always think it was being attacked on the

game ports and start blocking traffic on them. Sure glad I found that update, I did however have to directly

email the router company's tech support (SMC) they got back to me almost immediately with the firmware

attached. Make sure to give that a try, it's the quickest easiest thing to try first and it will at least rule it out

as a problem.
