yet another "which notebook to buy"

I'm currently playing with the idea of replacing my current notebook. It's a 15 inch dothan centrino rig with a mobile 9700 that runs like a dream, but I'm thinking I'd like to switch to something thinner and lighter and use a desktop for gaming and more permanant applications. I'm looking for something in the 12" arena around $1500. It needs to be sufficient for internet browsing and email, office apps, viewing but not editing photos, and the occassional dvd on a plane. It won't be used for much else.

Any ideas for something near my price point?
 
i believe fujitsu has some really light notebooks (~3 lbs) with excellent battery life. check out cnet.com for some reviews on these notebooks
 
Though I've always been a windows user, I'm thinking powerbook is the way to go, especially since I can get a pretty substantial student discount. I'm not terribly partial to MAC OS but it's certainly worth learning to appreciate, right?🙂
 
vote is for a mac...they just look so nice...battery life is pretty decent

thin and light will cost a few good ones...can't go wrong with a powerbook if ur a student

no need to be worried about viruses and the sort

I'm afraid 10 inches is just too small a screen for me. Some of those other Fujitsus do look really nice, though. I'm impressed how low they keep the weights even up to screen sizes of 14 inches (check out the S7000 under "thin and light").

Does anybody have any experience with Fujtsu's products? Do they perform as advertised?

Yeah, look at the S series if you want a larger screen... (S6321 with 13.3" would be my choice as it's slightly smaller than the S7000 with 14") The CrystalView screens are very nice. Fujitsu makes some of the best laptops IMO, they're just not that well known in North America.

Then again, the 12" or 15" Powerbook are excellent also, especially with a student discount.

 
The new PowerBook would be very tempting - the only catch is that the battery life isn't quite as good as with the iBook, although the PowerBook might last longer in stock configuration (it has a 60 GB 5400 RPM drive) and has Bluetooth 2.0.

If you get either one, be sure to get Office 2004 Student and Teacher Edition at the same time. Yeah, it's Microsoft, but it's what you'll want if you want to be sure that files will import/export properly.
 
If you're a student and interested in getting a mac I would suggest one of 2 things:

12" iBook (80gb HDD, 256mb ram, bluetooth) $1,174 without the student discount (I'm too lazy to look it up again w/ the discount lol)
12" Powerbook rev C (60gb HDD, 256mb ram, bluetooth, superdrive - all standard) $1,399 w/ the student discount (this is the previous rev C machine and apple is trying to get rid of them... they are 1.33ghz machines) You can also get this one w/o the superdrive for $1,199 w/ student discount

1gb dimms can be had for $160 from outpost.com for the powerbook... they will also work in the iBook w/ it's slower bus....
