Yet another thread about gas prices, except its not about U.S. gas prices.

Turkish

Lifer
k i somehow messed it up when i was trying to post.

anyways, freaking gas prices in Turkey are ridiculous due to taxes. a liter of gas is about $2.10 which is, according to my research, the most expensive throughout the world. in the u.s., a liter of gas goes for around $0.62, so the gas prices are almost 3 times more expensive here. nobody drives a v6 here, its either a 4 cyclinder or a 3 cyclinder diesel. now that i was thinking of purchasing a vehicle here, i am reconsidering my options. freakin 109% tax on gas is the lamest thing a government can ever do.

/end rant

Oil - production: 48,000 bbl/day (2001 est.)
Oil - consumption: 619,500 bbl/day (2001 est.)
Oil - imports: 616,500 bbl/day (2001)

freakin 109% tax on gas is the lamest thing a government can ever do.

So you think it is lame to try to minimize the amount of oil they need to purchase from the Islamic dictatorships that border them? Do you realize that they border three of the seven US State Department designated state sponsors of terrorism?

What's your point really? Should Turkey import oil from Venezuella, all the way on the other side of the world? And what does this have anything to do with the tax? And US State Department designated state sponsors of terrorism don't mean sh!t to the majority of the people, we saw what kind of terrorism the US is all about ini Iraq.

And what does this have anything to do with the tax?

The tax increases the cost to consumers which depresses the amount of oil demanded.

"Around 90 percent of Turkey's oil supplies are imported, mainly from the Middle East (Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Syria)"

This is a very unstable region which has experienced war and government coups every decade of our lifetimes. Therefore it is in their interest to limit their dependence on commodities that they import from these countries. Most countries that are dependent on foreign oil have similar taxes.
