So I was driving downtown, going along a one way street and see this guy walking along the back bumper of his truck, parked on the left side of the street. I think nothing of it, driving on at normal downtown traffic speed, which is commonly on or a little under the 50km/h limit. When I'm almost at the truck, the guy suddenly without looking jumps off the side, right in front of my car. Luckily I had checked my right mirror before and knew there should be no one beside me, so I didn't hesitate to swerve out of the way into the right lane, front fender narrowly missing the idiot. Looking back, I don't think he knew anything happened. God, how stupid can people be? I'm sure I had some responsibility in the near-miss; I probably should be been more careful, changed lanes when I saw a guy walking on the back of his truck. But I don't think anyone can really expect some idiot to jump backwards into the path of a moving car. Seriously, this guy might have been hit if I just tried to stop in a straight line. Hell, I'd say it could have been close enough that he might have been hit if I was driving my van rather than the CR-V. I don't know to what degree I'd be responsible if there was an accident, but this guy could have lost his life if my attention wandered off the road for that second.
