yet another slk900 question

so i have my fancy slk900a sitting infront of me, and a mobile 2600+m and dfi lanparty in the mail.

I currently have this fan ready to go for it, however, I have heard that some people are using a slight duct mod to prevent the "dead spot" of air under the center of the fan. I was looking for some more information about this. What does this do for tempatures and what might I use to acomplish this with my fan..

(incase you don't wanna click or whatever the specs of the fan I got are:

90x90x25mm 56cfm @ 36db)

OR could someone possibly recommend a better fan option for me? I want to keep noise to a minimum and maximize my cooling (no louder than the 36db fan I have right now). I know that typically the more cfm you push the louder its going to be so that is why I tried to find a happy medium between cfm/noise.

I think it's more RPM:noise than CFM, which is why 120mm fans can push 70+ at 40 db and under. I don't know much about the Slk900 except it uses a bracket system to mount fans (no screw holes except going between the fins?) so I'm not sure how a duct would work. If the brackets support 120mm you might consider that. Though I see suggestions to use only 80mm with the slk900 as the deadspot on anything bigger defeats the purpose.

Sorry for the circular suggestion. Fatigue wins again.

slk900a and u are the same just different ways to attach. there is no way to attach a 120mm fan. my original question related on a slight duct mod to prevent that dead spot effect with 90/92mm fans (which the mounting does support). I chose the fan because it is quieter than any 80mm @ 56cfm. I figured that a 90mm fan capable of doing 56cfm @ only 36db would be better than a 92mm due to the deadspot of air.

but from what little i have read, a duct mod can be used to minimize the deadspot alltogether.

I think the SLK's triangular base is to minimise the deadspot problems anyway

I'm talking out my ass here but it's an educated guess out my ass...

I would expect your noise to increase with a duct and your overall CFM to slightly decrease (you can nearly eliminate the CFM decrease if you put 2 fans in series somehow). As for temps, I would expect them to be nearly the same, maybe 1-2C cooler. Overall, I would say it's not worth it.

I'm using the 900a with my M2400 and having great results. Currently usung a M92 Panaflo fan, nice and quite and good compromise between noise and cooling. A simple fan duct can be made by using a cheapo or dead 92 fan and taking out the guts leaving just the housing. Mount your fan to the fan housing and attach to the heatsink like normal. This should be enough of a spacer to reduce the deadspot in the center.

I biult a fairly air-tite cardboard/duct-tape converter to connect a 120mm fan to my old slk-800 and it didn't seem to have any cooling advantages over using just a regular good rpm/cfm 80 or 90mm fan

i use two 120mm fans to cool my water cooling radiator :)

i recommend just getting a 92mm vantec tornado and some kinda speed adjustment attachment to controll the right noise/speed ratio you want

good luck

i have a SLK900a with a vantec 80mm tornado, im not worried about a dead spot the silly fan pushes soo much air i dont think it matters

TD8034H 80mm 0.75A 5700RPM 84 CFM 70.4 dB
TD9238H 92mm 1.00A 4800RPM 119 CFM 70.1 dB

not exactly quite but i dont care

funny they both make the same ammount of noise, 1amp is a ton for a fan tho but man thats some air movement

id say get the 92mm one with a voltage regulator so you can turn down teh speed, you coudl prov run it so it pushes 84 CFM and it wouldent be that loud

digitalemperor,
Have you ever considered a TMD fan?
I have one on my SLK 800 and it works great! Just a thought as this kind of fan eliminates about 70% of what you're worried about; the center dead spot on regular fans.
