Ordered a package on Monday, it shipped on Tuesday from Evansville IN. Here's the transit log:

- 5/03/2013 - Friday
7:33 pm Arrived at FedEx location SACRAMENTO, CA
9:49 am In transit RENO, NV
- 5/02/2013 - Thursday
5:50 am In transit OLATHE, KS
5:13 am Departed FedEx location LENEXA, KS
- 5/01/2013 - Wednesday
8:36 pm Arrived at FedEx location LENEXA, KS
8:24 am Departed FedEx location NASHVILLE, TN
5:37 am Arrived at FedEx location NASHVILLE, TN
1:08 am Left FedEx origin facility EVANSVILLE, IN
- 4/30/2013 - Tuesday
1:31 pm Arrived at FedEx location EVANSVILLE, IN
12:45 pm Picked up EVANSVILLE, IN
8:58 am Shipment information sent to FedEx

The silly part? I'm in rural NV about 20 minutes away from Reno. They shipped my package through Reno on the way to Sacramento only to have to ship it right back,

I disagree.

This isn't one of those times where I'm sending something from Sacramento to San Francisco and they route it through Lexington.

It's going from Indiana to Reno. It got to Reno. They sent it to Sacramento. Then they're going to have to send it back to Reno. They gave it a transit scan in Reno, so regardless of whether it went ground or air it had to have been taken off the vehicle it was on and scanned.

Edited: I'd also point out that it took ~10 hours to get from Reno to Sacramento. That's a 2.5 - 3 hour (tops) drive in the spring. That means it had to be sitting around somewhere, my guess was it was in Reno...

Not worth digging your package out of the giant semi while it was in Reno. Better to send it to a sorting facility where it and other packages destined for Reno, probably most of them from California, can all be sent there at once.

Exactly. It probably went through Reno on it's way to Sacramento. I bet that truck wasn't in the part of the Reno facility where they unload packages destined for Reno.

What FedEx does never ceases to amaze me, when I think about the possibilities of sending stuff worldwide overnight.

IIRC, "in transit" means it is in transit, and therefore cannot be delivered yet.

My favorite was when I shipped a package between two Bay Area cities about 10 miles apart, and it went through Memphis.

The most ridiculous routing I've ever seen was on a package that my Dad had gotten from CafePress. It took something like 2 weeks and went from California to Chicago, then to Philly, then to my parents' hometown, then back to California again... it was completely outrageous. I'll have to see if my dad still has the tracking number so I can look it up.
