Retired general: Iraq invasion was 'strategic disaster'
The Lowell Sun

WASHINGTON -- The invasion of Iraq was the ?greatest strategic disaster in United States history,? a retired Army general said yesterday, strengthening an effort in Congress to force an American withdrawal beginning next year., Retired Army Lt. Gen. William Odom, a Vietnam veteran, said the invasion of Iraq alienated America's Middle East allies, making it harder to prosecute a war against terrorists.

The U.S. should withdraw from Iraq, he said, and reposition its military forces along the Afghan-Pakistani border to capture Osama bin Laden and crush al Qaeda cells.

?The invasion of Iraq I believe will turn out to be the greatest strategic disaster in U.S. history,? said Odom, now a scholar with the Hudson Institute.

Homeward Bound, a bipartisan resolution with 60 House co-sponsors, including Lowell Rep. Marty Meehan, requests President Bush to announce plans for a draw-down by December, and begin withdrawing troops by October 2006.

The measure has not been voted on, nor has the House Republican leadership scheduled hearings. But supporters were encouraged yesterday, pointing to growing support among moderate conservatives and the public's rising dissatisfaction with the war.

Meehan, one of the first to propose a tiered exit strategy in January, when few of his Democratic colleagues dared wade into the controversial debate, pointed to ?enormous progress.?

?Talking about this issue, having hearings on this issue, getting more Americans to focus on it will result in a change of policy,? Meehan told The Sun. ?The generals and commanders on the field in Iraq overwhelmingly are saying we need less in terms of occupation and more Iraqis up front, and that's the only strategy I think that will result in getting American troops back home.?

-- EVAN LEHMANN

How many is that now? 8-9 generals even the JCS Zenni was canned for voiceing concerns. Add in all those CIA guys I'm 100% convinced this war is for pure profit motive to the MIC and defense policy board partcipants.

They warned Bush about jumping to war even before the war started. I remember Gen. Shinseki cautioning the planners that Iraq wasn't going to be the pretty picture they were trying to paint. It's unfortunate that the planners of this war probably knew this, but didn't care. The motives were always profits.

if the goal of our military was to completely secure iraq without any reservations, then our well-trained superior forces would have been able to do the job as well as any conquerer could. but our military has been bogged down with political problems that our present administration practically dumped in their laps due to those near-sighted rose-colored glasses that they insist on wearing and refuse to take off.

the administration is stubbornly sticking to a mindset that is getting them deeper and deeper into the middle-east quicksand that they're standing in.

if you view this administration with the thought in mind that the people over there in the white house are really smart and wise, then one would have to assume that they planned for things to happen exactly the way it has happened, and for the time-being they do want things to remain as they are over there for reasons that are beyond our ability to comprehend.

to quote a local labor leader - "any dumb ass can get you into a serious conflict, but it takes a real smart fella to get you out of it."

Don't worry, everything is going fine. Sanders Chocolate company and FTD are having record deliveries to Iraq. Chocolates and flowers are being tossed all over the place.

Who said "War is too important to be left to a bunch of draft dodging rich kids who think the poor are cannon fodder"

Oh, right. It was me.

Oh come now...

If this guy is so smart, then why is he retired?

Obviously he can't cut it anymore.

How can this traitor be spewing this defeatist rhetoric and not be arrested?

Who should we believe? Some obviously disgruntled has been retiree, or the man an overwhelming majority of right thinking Americans elected TWICE to be our COMMANDER in CHIEF?

It's about time "morans" like this learn a little "greatitude" and shut up, because soldiers are dying defending their "right" to speak this leftist garbage.

You forgot a sarcasm smiley 😛

This General guy should just be quiet. That type of talk only fuels the insurgency. Besides, if he were so smart, he would be on TV answering questions from nincompoop reporters and not working at some stupid university.

What's with the dig at the Ivies? You really think Bush & crew went to those schools because they were qualified?

My sentiments as well, I've known several Ivy League college grads and by and large they are stand-up people.

You know what's interesting about "fueling the insurgency"? If we had done a good job in the first place, there would be no insurgency to worry about "fueling". This really is like the cops blaming a rape victim for "wearing a short skirt" because they were too fvcking incompetent to catch the guy in the first place.

The American Settlers fighting against the British during the American Revolution were probably called Insurgents too, right?

That comparison would be correct up until the Iraqi insurgents started targeting Iraqi civilians.

So I guess this means you weren't aware of the violence, theft, and rape directed towards many non-combative Loyalists during the War for Independence...
Pretty valid comparison really, despite it's unsavory nature.

No I wasn't, not on any large scale outside of isolated incidents.

Goebbels would be so proud of Rove.

Trust me, it went beyond isolated incidents. Hell, American Revolutionaries even mass printed and distributed instructions on 'How to Properly Tar and Feather a Loyalist.' The Canadien areas of modern day New Brunswick and Ontario were receiving Loyalist refugees for a reason! Illegal property seizures and sound beatings were especially quite common. Another interesting point, is that the British presence in the colonies was denounced in many small community Protestant churches in much the same manner our presence in Iraq has been chewed at by Iraqi clerics. Go figure.
