The American Future Fund, a conservative organization based in Iowa, has been one of the more active players in this fall’s campaigns, spending millions of dollars on ads attacking Democrats across the country. It has not hesitated to take credit for its attacks, issuing press releases with headlines like “AFF Launches TV Ads in 13 States Targeting Liberal Politicians.”

But interviews found that the group was started with seed money from at least one influential Iowa businessman: Bruce Rastetter, a co-founder and the chief executive of one of the nation’s larger ethanol companies, Hawkeye Energy Holdings, and a rising force in state Republican politics

Big business is behind the GOP because they have them in their pocket. Why the average American falls for this bullshit or thinks that they have their best interests at heart is beyond me though.

I wonder what percentage of our insurance premiums goes toward lobbying...

Less Pork barrel spending has slowed down the manufacturing of the barrels significantly, which raised the prices of existing barrels, which in turn increased the price on pork and eventually bacon, very sad...

The basic ignorance level in your post touches 100%. It was a Republican program, Leroy.

Absolutely. It get's even more interesting. Back in 1948 the Republicans were AGAINST farm subsidies like they had been for 75 years. The reason Truman won election is that the Republicans tried to kill the subsidies by selling off the only silo's where the government subsidized grain could be stored.

Low and behold, just as farmers were going to store their crop in 1948 they found out there were no silo's to store it in. At the last minute there was a Democratic surge in support.

However, by the end of the 1950's the big corporations had managed to squeeze out many of the small independently owned farms. And then, of course, the Republicans were suddenly in FAVOR of farm subsidies.

Oh, it gets more interesting. When the Democrats took power under Clinton they started phasing out crop subsidies. In fact, they were almost entirely gone by the time Clinton left office. Guess what? When the Republicans took power under Bush the reinstated the crop subsidies. THEN they manadated ethanol be made ONLY from corn. And increased the corn subsidies.

Wow. Amazing how little people know about the Republicans.
