Yet another question. . . microphone not working on mini

Ok, I finally got around to plugging my functional (works fine on wife's computer) plantronics headset mic combo into the mini. I plugged the plugs into the right ports - with the microphone into the line in port.

There is no recognition at all of any sound coming into the mini from several programs. I've went to the control panel of sorts and it doesn't register sound from it either.

Got to diggin and it seems that regular mics don't work with the mini? Is this true?

I saw some references to a 30$ griffin product that changes regular mics to 'mini' compatible ones over usb - but I saw alot of references to this product causing unacceptable humming.

So, I need what exactly ? (this is even more frustrating as I needed to do a screen recording today)
 
Bluetooth headset should work just fine. As for the mic issue, I had gotten mics working on my old first gen MacBook... not sure what may have changed... Maybe it is just a Mini thing, you might want to get a USB mic, they aren't that expensive, unless you already have a bluetooth headset of course.
