Yet another PSU question. Need to buy one. Don't know which to get??

I guess my PSU is not cutting it for my o/c efforts as I'm getting random reboots while overclocking my pc. I have a Comtec (Com what you say??) PSU which I think served me more than well till today and it's slowly dying.

The 3.3v rail is at 3.26v now and the 5v rail is at 4.73v. I guess when it drops below 4.7v, the whole pc becomes unstable and it'll reboot.

I've read other threads regarding PSU and still cannot come to a conclusion to which to get. Any help guys?? I would want something good and yet powerful. 350Watt would be nice but a 430Watt does help if the price is right. 🙂 I need a stable PSU.

What exactly is your budget? Most people around here would blindly recommend the usual suspects - Antec Truepower, Enermax EG series and the Sparkles, but they might not fit within your budget.

Alright. I'm NEARLY certain that my PSU is not cutting it. I ran SETI and the 5v rail dropped till 4.6v. I guess I really need to change it.

No point spending 30 bucks on a cheap PSU. I've seen cheap PSU eating up mobos and HDD in the past. Budget is anything below 80 dollars. I'm currently looking at the Antec True380 which is rated at 380watt. I guess that's the best thing to get now?? I heard Enermax is not very good with certain mobo and the power output is not very constant.

Sparkle, Antec, and Enermax are the top three in my book. Enermax being my personal favorite, but everyone likes their own. I would recommend either an Antec 380 or 430 from Beatprice.com (the prices there are $59 and $80 respectively, with $4 shipping) or an Enermax 430W from MpcParts (the price is $73 with $7 shipping). The one nice thing about Antecs is the rails don't draw from the same source. In other words, if you're running 12 hard drives, 5 CD-RW drives, and 18 Vantec Tornados - all of which run off the +12V rail - your CPU - which runs off the +5V rail - won't even notice. That's not to say that the PS could actually handle 12 hard drives, 5 CD-RW drives and 18 fans, but if it could, regardless of whether or not it is strained, your O/C'd proc would never feel it. However, the nice thing about the Enermax is, since it does run off the same power source, if you have a normal amount of hard drives, CDROM drives, and fans, while your proc is sucking power like there's no tomorrow, there will be room to spare.

You can choose for yourself which is better.

BTW, by the time I posted, there were two more responses. I'm currently running an AXP 2000+, 5 hard drives all running at 7200 RPM, a CD-RW drive, a DVD-ROM drive, and 5 case fans. When I first got this case, it came with Turbolink 350W PS. I had already bought the Enermax 430 (the one they call a 465), but was really saving it for my dream system (to be built whenever AMD decides to bring out the Hammer). So I just went ahead and hooked everything up with that PS. That thing was HOT to the touch after 15 minutes! So, being consierably worried, I switched out PSs, and not only is the PS not even warm (it's the same temp as the back of the case), the air coming out of it isn't even warm. Trust me, there's nothing wrong with Enermaxes.

Thanks dude. How legit is beatprice?? Their price on the Antec True380 is nice. 59+4 = 63 shipped. I have 4 80mm fans,2 Hdd and Optical drives (DVD and burner) with a 60mm fan on the CPU, internal Zip drive. I would need room for future though. Seems that Antec is a nice choice. Sparkle is way out of my league. 🙂

Actually Sparkles are cheaper than Enermaxes and Antecs, but they don't have the super high power 400+W PSUs that the former 2 do, not that you neccessarily need it. $80 will get you a pretty good ~400W PSU. I'd say in that price range, the Antec True380 seems to be the one to get at around $60, followed by the Enermax EG365VE. The True430 and Enermax EG465-VE might be more than $80 especially if you add shipping.

Personally I also prefer Enermax to Antec, but that's my own personal ungrounded preference...they should be serve you well.

I would personally get the PC & Power Cooling 475W with PFC. 1% regulation compared to antecs or enermax's 3-5%. However, these thingfs are expensive in which case i'd recommend a sparkle 60ATVS 300W for $25 at newegg.

I think you've had enough suggestions, any more suggestions would only serve to make your decision harder than it should be 🙂
Basically, all of the above-mentioned PSUs are decent, quality products, and any one would do just fine for you, just take your pick! 🙂

I don't think the Robanton is AMD recommended though. AMD doesn't recommend PSUs that have fans drawing air in from the side of the PSU. They recommend that the fans draw air in from the bottom of the PSU.

Goi you are correct as @ 1 time AMD prefered the fans to be on the bottom...As of late ,however, AMD no longer recommends nor tests PSU's...The Robanton should/would work nicely with proper cooling.

I specifically listed shipping on those items. I didn't check the shipping on the Antecs, but I did actually check the shipping on the Enermax, and it is actually $6.95 shipping. I can't say much personally for Beatprice.com, but I have ordered from MpcParts before and have no complaints. Besides, I like the Enermax more anyway. That will settle your problem. Right at your budget too.

AHHHH!!! I was just going to ResellerRatings.com and found that BeatPrice has a 3.3 out of 10! Apparently, they are the same company as United-Micro.com. The comments are scalding. Look at the second one from Wicked00. I would not trust them. If you would like an Antec, just go back to Pricewatch.com and find the best price you can from someone that has a respectable reseller rating.

The Enermax EG365 is actually a 350W PS. I'm not sure why Enermax does this with their naming schemes and all, but if you just take a second to check them out, it's obvious that their wattage rating does not match their part number. It's good, I just like to have the extra insurance of 430W.

Well if you could get the EG465-VE under $80, including shipping, then I guess that's the best in that price range...

As for the fan placement issue, I guess I concur with AMD's logic, if you think about it, it does kinda make sense, at least theoretically.
