My folding bike

Singlespeed. I should have a fixie coming pretty soon, though. 🙂
I think that is fastest looking folder I've ever seen with those wheels. 😛

You should see the "TT" model with real cowhorn bars and Ultegra brifters. $300 more and impossible to find, so I "settled". 😀 Anyway my folder is fast and climbs very well: I'm taking it to attempt a ride up Haleakala in August (38 miles, 10,000' straight-up climbing, yeah!).

I've been meaning to take some pics of my new bike, and now the occasion calls but my battery is dead. I will mark this for tomorrow.

So, bike folks, if I have $250 or so to spend on TWO bikes, and they need to be capable of surviving at least 2400 miles over a year or two, on pavement or packed dirt (and there are some interesting extended hill sections), what the hell should I be looking at? Comfort isn't a big issue, and they can be stored indoors. And this is a very, very serious question. Because that's what I need, and that's all the money I have to play with.

I actually did fairly well for about two years on a Walmart junker under those same conditions when I was younger, and I'm tempted to just go grab two of those, but I want to see what you guys think first.

You should be looking at used road bikes from the 70's or 80's.

Look on Craig's list for used hybrid/City bike. For retail stores, k1, Iron Horse, Diamondback, etc aren't too bad. Sounds like you're casul rider and just in it for fun. Weight will be factor, but I doubt you'll charge the hills etc. As for craftsmanship, well these bikes at Walmart etc were meant for park riding etc. So actually know your level of riding, so don't worry about getting hardcore bike. I see people quit all the time after riding in upper 90 degree weather, so maybe you'll find a bargain.

I've seen old Treks go for under 150 etc and brands mention above even cheaper. You can probably bargain on CL etc.

If you can hold out til end of summer, you can probably get some these brands cheap at your sportstore etc.

Have fun riding.
