Yet another Plasma HDTV thread?

Alright, so I'm looking at the Philips ambient whatever 42" plasma HDTV. I like it a lot. Not really looking for suggestions on other TVs (although if you have any comments regarding this one I'd like to hear it).

I'm feeling almost obligated to get the warranty. I went to CC yesterday and they wanted $2400 for the TV, $500 for the warranty, tack on another 150ish for tax., it's a bit intimidating. I'm thinking about going to best buy and taking advantage of their 24 month no interest and price matching CC's price. They sell the plan for $400.

Now.. Is the plan worth it? I mean, I heard plasma's are a lot more reliable than they used to be, but what's the standard warranty these things come with/provide? I'm sure different manufacturer's might have different lengths, but what do they cover? Should I spend that freakin 4-500 for a BB or CC warranty?

Any advice is appreciated.

getting the ambient lighted tv? way to be trendy 😛

yes, get the warranty. there is no reason not to get the warranty on such a big purchase

i would rather pay circuit city $100 more than best buy to get their warranty over best buy's. Best Buy will try every which way they possibly can to screw you out of using the warranty when you actually need it.

EDIT: also, you can bargain prices w/circuit city as well on some of the service plans or the price of the TV. just try to get them to drop the price $100 if you will get the $500 service plan. It looks better for those guys if they sell the service plan than it does if they just sell the TV.

Phillips plasma's are made by LG (Luck Goldstar)... I'd strongly suggest spending a bit more for a Panasonic or JVC.

Although brand reliability is a factor in your decision, you could get end up with a set that just happens to go bad after the factory warranty expires...this could happen to ANY brand of TV...

I would get the warranty (I did on both my HDTV's - glad I never had to use them though).

thanks for the advice. what's wrong with LG screens? I hear the blacks on panasonic is better, but i like the feature set on the philips a lot more.

It's pretty bad that you have to pay a 20% premium to ensure you wont get a lemon. What ever happened to manufacturers making a decent product and guaranteeing it?

4-500 is pretty steep. ive bought several TVs and none have gone bad in the first 4 years. is everyone being paranoid? or do they have problems THAT often?

I'm pissed that they warranty is so short on some expensive electronics. If you're spending $5000 on a TV, they should give you a 3 year warranty. It's really sad.

Bad deal. They are charging 20% to ensure the TV for two extra years over the Mfr warranty? What is this TV going to be worth after 1 year, 2 years? I'm guessing that this TV is going to depreciate to the price you paid for the warranty towards the 3rd year. So you are really only helping yourself if the TV happens to break after the 1st year and before the start of the 3rd year.

Obviously, the want you to buy the unnecessary warranty to help their own profit margins.
