Yet another Opteron 165 OC'ing...

Got my Opteron last week but only got my motherboard yesterday. This chip looks very promising.

CPU Type: Opteron 165
CPU Stepping: 0551 VPMW
Cooling: Zalman 7000AlCu, fan at 70%
Motherboard: Asus A8R MVP
RAM: 2x512 No-brand with Hynix chips. This RAM is about a year and a half old, but it's good for at least 250 MHz

Tested so far (reverse chronological order):

CPU Frequency: 2565MHz
CPU voltage: 1.35V
HTT: 285 MHz
RAM BIOS setting: "133 MHz"

Test: Currently testing Prime95 for 24 hours.

CPU Frequency: 2610MHz
CPU voltage: 1.375V
HTT: 290 MHz
RAM BIOS setting: "133 MHz"

Test: Failed 2x Prime95

CPU Frequency: 2565MHz
CPU voltage: 1.35V
HTT: 285 MHz
RAM BIOS setting: "133 MHz"
Actual RAM frequency: 183 MHz

Test: 2x Prime95, 46 minutes Quick stability check, want 2.6 GHz or better for overnight prime 😀.

nice, where did you buy it from? I got my Opteron 170 today from an order made at Monarch 2.16.06: 0550 VPMW but im waiting to see what the DRI/DFI 580 ATi MB chipset offers.
 
Awesome. I have a UPMW which is closely related to the VPMW and I've gotten great results so far as well (see sig) 😀

VibeComputers, a Canadian e-tailer; the stepping was the luck of the draw.
 
I don't want to burst your bubble but this stepping 0551 vpmw seems to be great up to 2.6Ghz with a slight bump in volts then it hits a wall for Prime at 2.65Ghz no matter how many volts you throw at it. SuperPi 32m at 2.77Ghz @ 1.55v . Anyways you have a FX60 chip for a fraction of the cost.

well, this is pretty much what it's looking like. Doesn't like 2.6 at 1.375V and I have no intentions of overvolting any more than that on the long term, so it looks like I'll stick to 2.57 GHz @ 1.35 if it's stable over 24 hours of Prime95.

2.6 GHz at stock voltage was at the top end of my expectations anyway, so I'm happy enough with anything above 2.5 GHz. I could probably eke out a couple of hundred MHz by turning up my case fans (which are both at 7V) and CPU fan for better air circulation since my temps are pretty high, but I won't. Silence, as they say is golden. 🙂
