We all know Obama has flipped on several key issues campaign ----> taking office. This is yet the latest. Ive really wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt on several issues, but in reagrds to illegal immigrants I am pretty conviced he has no wish whatsoever to either stop the flow of illegal immigrants or to go after a key reason they hop our border: to find work.

High court ruling on Arizona act could shape immigration law

President Obama once favored a "crackdown on employers" who hired illegal immigrants, and as a candidate called for "much tougher enforcement standards" for companies that employed illegal workers.

But this week, Obama's top courtroom lawyer will join the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in urging the Supreme Court to strike down an Arizona law that goes after employers who hire illegal workers. The administration also seeks to void a part of the state's law that tells employers they must check the federal government's E-Verify database to make sure their new hires are authorized to work in the United States.

The administration found itself in an awkward spot in part because the Legal Arizona Workers Act was signed into law in 2007 by then- Gov. Janet Napolitano. She said it would impose the "business death penalty" on employers caught a second time hiring illegal workers, and blamed "the flow of illegal immigration into our state … [on] the constant demand of some employers for cheap, undocumented labor."

Now, however, Napolitano is Obama's secretary of Homeland Security, which enforces the immigration laws and administers E-Verify, a voluntary electronic program that checks whether new hires are authorized to work in the United States. Federal agencies and federal contractors are required to use the program.

The federal government has no right to regulate commerce inside a state; It can only regulate interstate commerce and foreign trade. Funny thing is though, almost everything sold comes from China. Even some large food chains consider their individual stores to be independently owned small businesses.

the feds have had the right to do so ever since the supreme court decided that congress could regulate growing food for yourself under the commerce clause.

Federal Law trumps State Law.

Shocking, but true.

So why haven't the Feds taken action on any other such situations? There are plenty of state laws that conflict with Federal laws... but it seems immigration laws are the only ones that the President seems interested in striking down.

Medicinal Marijuana is legal in CA... But it is still illegal by Federal law standards. Why hasn't the Federal government moved to strike down those laws? I eagerly await your answer.

There was a thread about this a couple months ago in which I destroyed the outright lie being propogated by Napolitano.

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2110994&highlight=deportations+immigration

The Obama administration has NOT increased deportations. Saying that deportations are at an all-time high is an out-and-out LIE. Deportations DECREASED YoY, and specifically, the amout of forceful deportations (Removals) increased slightly, while voluntary self-deportations (Returns) decreased dramatically.

The only way Napolitano can claim that deportations increased is because she is ignoring FY09 numbers and comparing FY10 to FY08. She was more than happy to take credit for an increase in FY09 due to the Bush policies that were in place, but now that rates have decreased, she basically ignoring that year and finding a comparison that makes it look like an increased.

It's a flat-out lie, and shows how much integrity and fact-checking ability a lot of these news outlets really have.

This is what I suspected, thanks for the info.

But in defense of Obama, Bush set the bar pretty low. More of a parking lot stripe, really. And I was never under the impression that Obama wanted to stem the flow of illegals anyway; on the contrary, I have always thought he sees illegals as simply a tool to gain political control for the Democrats and to help fundamentally change the country.

Deportations doubled under Bush.

Obama's HDS (Napolitano) has publicly said that the administration is more interested in making sure that illegal immigrants receive equal employment rights under US law than making sure illegal immigrants are removed from the country. This wasn't made as a statement to say, remove the incentive and business won't hire illegal, it was made as a statement to illegal immigrants, saying that the government is there to support them, not deport them.

Nobody with a shred of intellectual honesty can look at this administration and think that they are actually working to improve the illegal immigration situation in any way, shape, or form. Obama's words and actions have shown that he is more concerned with the rights of the rest of the world than the prosperity of Americans.

Oh, I see what Obama did. He's such a smart fucker. He stonewalled Napolitano while she was governor of Arizona because he needed to assert Federal power. But now that he made her Secretary of DHS, he can claim all the credit for what she is allowed to do about the problem.
