See my web page (cd/dvd section) for info on filter drivers. You'll need to compare those drivers on your system with a fully working system to see what's different.

Had a bit or a roller-coaster ride:(

I tried to remove SP2 (arstechnica thread mentioned that) before transferring the motherboard - and it came up!

Specifically, I did the following preparations on the old computer:
Replace Via IDE driver with Standard.
Replace Via PCI-to-AGP driver with Standard.
Remove Via AGP filter (the only non-plug-and-play device that had Intel or Via in the name).
Disable Kaspersky Internet Suite 7.0.
Remove SP2.
Moved the HDD to the new computer.
Came up with SP1!!!!

I then installed the new drivers from the CD, all's well except there is still an "unknown" device supposedly connected to the PCI-to-ISA bridge. No further information that I could find.

Now the downhill part: After it was all running at SP1 level (Kasperky still disabled), I did an upgrade (run Setup from the CD) from the SP2 slip-streamed CD (the one that had done a good fresh install above) - blue screen again.

The specific data on the BSOD is:
Check 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xBAA78750, 0XBAACCB42C, BAACCB128)

The arstechnica thread points to KB888372, which acknowledges the possibility but doesn't give a solution. The arstechnica author says
I was able to get service pack 2 working ONLY after I deleted the IntelPPM and IntelIDE keys from the registry under current control set.
I hope I can do that in safe mode and not need to redo the whole sequence.

I'd suggest going back to where you were when it worked (SP1), and then simply installing SP2 from Windows Update. It sounds like there's something odd in the slipstreamed XP+SP2 CD you're using. Why do a full reinstall if the intent is to simply move to SP2?

Anyway, you can debug that dumpfile easily (see my website for the how-to) and tell what the problem is if you like.

Now I can't proceed with the same HDD because it's BSODing in the middle of the update and Safe Mode is not available during update.:|

Based on KB888372 I would not bet that installing SP2 as a specific step would make a difference. I need to get the IntelPPM stuff out from the system.

I used a SysInternals ERD CD to take out the IntelPPM from the registry, still BSODed booting into the upgrade. Deleted the IntelPPM.sys driver from the Windows directories, and it booted OK but BSODed in the installation, I would assume when trying to install the IntelPPM driver. Oof, it's persistent.

Looking in the original setup, I have ControlSet02 and ControlSet03 in the registry and they both have IntelPPM. The ERD found only one ControlSet - maybe one was the SP1 hive? I am no registry guru.

It seems another ghost is in the books for me:Disgust; It took 3 hours to get to the SP1 working + drivers state.

I did another fresh ghost. Beyond the steps detailed above, I was more careful about taking any reference to IntelPPM out of the registry while still on the old computer, and installed SP2 fro the SP2 CD rather than install over from my slipstreamed CD. I do not know (nor care anymore:)) which was the crucial factor.

Now I need to fight with Kaspersky because the old computer and the new one have the same key...

And go to the Motherboard forum for help with the "unknown" device still there.

Hurray for the arstechnica thread. All the info's there, although the IntelPPM could have had more details.
