Not really a rant, but I'm getting sick of seeing people giving advice to others that is COMPLETE BULLSHIT. If you don't know what you're talking about, don't try to help others - it's as simple as that. I see people over in other forums giving BS advice to other users who don't have a clue who would BELIEVE them. It makes me sick. You see this same situation elsewhere all of the time, too.

I know most of the people who hang out in Off Topic, (surprisingly) are not absolute morons, so this isn't for you...

ARRGH

Here's an example - a person asks help setting up ICS on 56k and here's part of a person's response:

"...
I wouldn't even bother with WinGate if it's only 56K. Too much overhead, it'll slow it down.

Use the built-in Windows ICS. Don't forget to turn off firewall (again, it'll slow it down plus it's too slow for any hacker anyway)."

WTF???? Overhead added by using WinGate on a DIALUP connection???? LOL And a simple I/O packet filter slowing down a dialup connection? Oh, and dialup is too slow for a hacker to steal your personal information

I have no idea what you're talking about, but I believe you.

I completely agree. Same for the threads that roughly go: "Man, my car makes a wierd clunking noise when I go over bumps" and the reply is something like "Have you repalced the distributer cap and changed the air filter?"

I was going to say plug wires, but I guess I was wrong.

The persons that come to this forum for medical advice get what they deserve if they follow it.

"I stubbed my toe"

"Soak it in sulfuric acid"

"Ok, thanks will do"

when you connect at 19.2kbps and cant even keep that connection for more than an hour or 2 at once, security really isnt your highest priority. luckily, we had the phone company come out a few weeks ago and "fix" the line. before that I was getting 12-16k connections that lasted 5 minutes or less. it was kinda funny, the phone tech guy said "well, its only a voice grade line so we can't guarantee full 56k speeds. the best we can guarantee is between 14k and 19k." i said "well im only connected at 12k right now." he says "oh, damn"

I was thinking the muffler bearing or maybe the skyhook was bent.

Trust me. I was there. All I can get now is StarBand - sure beats my old 28.8 downloads (bleh). I used to get 1.2 Mbps on StarBand now I only get 600 Kbps... sort of like going back to dialup :( sort of...
