Well, i finally gave up my aging dual intel's....it was real hard to let go.

went from:

ABit VP6 - great dual mobo as long as no other components conflict
(x2) Pentium 3 933 mhz cBo steppings (yay)
(x2) Thermaltake gorbs
768 mb cas3 crucial
radeon LE - SUCKS HARD with SMP. went to a gf2 gtsv and framerates climbed greatly
sold the above for 490 gross

and now i sold it all, some on here, some on ars, and now i am proud to have:

Epox EP-8K7A+ amd 761/via south
Athlon XP 1600+ (not O/C.....yet)
Alpha 6035 hs (think thats the right number) and a noisy fan from 2cooltek for $29.
256 mb crucial 2.5 cas 2100 (about to add another 256)
Gainward GF3ti 200 (so far getting almost 100fps in rtcw in 1024*768, 32bit, max all havent played with it at all)

in the end i broke even.

I want to say that the intel system kicked butt while it was good. but what mostly pissed me off was all the via problems....soundcards, etc, which has been said a million times b4.

i want to eventually go dual amd, but with the bios limits on new mobos i dunno if i will be able to with XP.

i did notice that on the epox mobo, i could turn on the MP id thingy in the bios, and it would post like i had an MP chip...is that supposed to do that??

i want to go mpx, but i need the 5/6 pci's, onboard raid, lan, no sound. dunno i that will happen.

so far this rig is rock hard stable

Bigbootydaddy glad you are happy ,I too went from Intel to AMD and have had excellent stability also the pricing helps a lot.Anyway I`ve no problems buying either Intel or AMD in the future it`s all down to best for value for money for me :).

I think the bios limits on the new boards for dual XPs might not be 100% true, I read a thread somewhere else about it, I guess we will all wait and see though.

Congrats on giving a good company like AMD a chance. I migrated from Intel to AMD about 2 years ago cause I was a broke kid trying to make ends. I have yet to be dissatisfied.

You can still use XP's in the 760MP boards from Tyan. The Tiger will run you just under $200 and another 1600+ will cost $140. Not too bad for a dual system that can outperform dual Xeons at 1.7Ghz.

Glad you were able to overcome the voices telling you to stay with what you know. Isn't it great, now we have a choice between what processor to get, and they both perform well enough that it's actually a hard decision.

This is the first time in my computing life that I ever remember anyone being better or even with Intel, they always had the best processor on the block, and now we have choices. I love them both so i'm definitely not trying to change this into an anti Intel/pro AMD thread.

why'd you get the 8k7a+? 8kha+ is so much faster... i guess you mentioned hating via. I dont have problems with my via chipset but oh well.

IMHO, neither 8K7A(+) or 8KHA+ are good choices.

Yes, I'm the resident VIA-hater :D

I just don't believe in spending $120 on a motherboard with core logic so buggy it requires incessant 4-in-1 "patches" and third party "patches" to correct (some) of the flaws. Doesn't make sense to me.

I'd highly recommend SiS 735 if you're looking for all-around high performance (with a low price tag), and without the headaches which are guaranteed to occur with a VIA-chipset based mainboard.

You aren't going to find many SiS boards sporting onboard RAID either. Why bigbootydaddy
wants onboard sound is a mystery to me. AC97 is a joke. Most 735 makers utilize the onboard LAN though, which is a nice feature. A good NIC card will only run you about $15 though, so it's not much of a savings.

Over at Ars there's a thread that indicates that the MPX will in fact work with dual XP's(not officially of course). The BIOS the guy who made the original claim with, was a only beta BIOS that had XP support disabled.

hey, i dunno if i wrote it funny, but i said i wanted NO onboard sound. I have a nice Hercules GTXP that i use and never have trouble with.

I aint going suck-it-sister (SiS), i dont mind 4in1s. its only like a 30 sec download...

i skipped the 8KHA cuz i was eager to see the 761 AND RAID.

i need RAID, cuz i dont want to spend 40 bucks or so on a ata100 card for more ide's (5 devices).

hope that cleared it up, RAID is my key.

Nothing at all wrong with the Epox board you listed. I had it(My wife has it now) and it is very fast and definitely very stable. I think you will be quite pleased with it.
