Benches in the Thugsrook format

Abit IC7 / P4 2.6C Benches

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TEST SYSTEM
Abit IC7 - BIOS version 13
P4 2.6C SL6WH | FPO # L310A652 | Pack Date 5/02/03
3.34 GHz | 257 FSB
Corsair XMS3200C2 (2x 512) mb
Alpha 8942 - Panaflo M1A
Radeon 9700P - 370/325 core/mem - Cat 3.4 - no AA/AF - default settings
Antec True330 - 330 watt PS
Win XP Pro SP1a
DX 9.0a

TEST SPECS
ABIT IC7 i875P = 1.6 Vcore | 1.5 VAGP | 2.8 Vdimm | PCI/AGP 66/33 | 5:4 ratio | DC DDR 412 | cas 2-2-2-5

I limited the Vcore to 1.6 max (my preference). The CPU may go higher with more Vcore, but I didn't try it.

There are a bunch of mem tweaks in the IC7 BIOS. Performance mode can be disabled, fast, turbo, ultra. I cant run turbo or ultra. I can "almost" run fast. Fast works fine, but will cause a Prime95 error after and hr or two. My ram is not quite good enough to run it. All benches above were set to disabled.

I went with a 2.4C + IC7 yesterday. I also decided on the Twinmos/Winbond CH-5 chips. Since most people could push the BH-5 chips that were .18um to ~ 230FSB, im hoping for atleast 236-240. I only have a GF4Ti 4200 64mb so thats gonna hurt my bench scores, but im waiting for the cards that are coming out in 9 months to upgrade.

230 - 240 FSB will limit your overclock to 2.76 - 2.88 GHz if you run 1:1. Use the 5:4 ratio and you can go to 3.3 - 3.45 GHz.

Good job with the 2.6C! I hope to be able to duplicate your efforts with a 2.8C.

nicely done:)!

I have a question for ya: does PAT seem to be enabled using the memory ratio (I assume you're using it;))?

Ah....the mysterious PAT. I have no way of telling. There is no "PAT enabled" type message in the BIOS @ post. From what I understand, it doesn't work @ 5:4. If this is true, it would not be enabled in my setup.

I hear ya about PAT;)

The reason I asked is because I have a P4P800 running @3410MHz with my XMS3200C2 at 2-2-2-6 and my default 3DMark2001SE Radeon 9700 score is 17,536, 800 fewer points than you at a lower fsb. I know the 1.3 bios for the IC7 is a major improvement over the previous version but I thought that perhaps you might be able to do the PAT thing at 5:4 (which we both know I cannot do on a P4P800). Hmm ...

Also, are you experiencing any major voltage fluctuations while loading the cpu (Prime95, etc.)? My Vcore goes nuts, up to a 0.12V variance!:Q

Whats the whole setup?

CPU?
FSB?
Ratio?
9700P core/mem? Mine was @ 370/325

Voltage shows 1.57 idle and 1.55 Prime95 in Speedfan.

I'm more interested with AA/AF enabled. Such a high end pc, how can have them disabled!?

Since those scores are so off the wall (up there), I doubt enabling AA/AF to 18x will make any game sluggish.

Sorry, didn't give you any info:)

2.6C @3410MHz (262fsb), 1.675Vcore (1.696V idle, ~1.6V load <--fluctuates)
1GB XMS3200C2, 2 x 512MB, 2-2-2-6, 5:4 ratio (MemTest'ed), 2.85Vdimm
WD 80GB JB harddrive
Radeon9700, stock (325/310), Omega Cat3.4 drivers
Antec TruePower 550W
SB Live! 5.1 OEM
Windows 2003 Server, Enterprise, DX9.0a

I hadn't noticed that your card was overclocked; 45MHz core + 15MHz mem could probably bridge that 800 point gap, my bad:p

btw, I had HT enabled when I scored the 17, 536; when I disabled HT and switched the system driver to uniproc, the score fell 300 points which is contrary to all the reviews, hmmph. I just reinstalled Windows2003 Server, Enterprise edition (heh:p), with HT disabled so I'll bench again once I get home. I'm going to post a thread here and at BleedinEdge once I gather all of my data, so there'll be more to come. I'm in the process of trying to see whether HT limited my overclock.

Thanks for the help:)

The 9700P clock speed will make a big difference. Other than the OS and Asus Vs Abit MB, your specs are very close to mine. Never tried the Omega drivers. I use the regular 3.4 Cats.

BTW, lots of Vcore there....what can you get with 1.6??

haven't really tried 1.6Vcore yet for long; interestingly, when I set it to 1.6Vcore the voltage idles at 1.664V so I figure that all I've really done is raise the floor of my load voltage (from 1.53V to 1.6V). I want to find my absolute (under 1.7Vcore) max and then I'll probably lower the Vcore some if the gains of the extra voltage are insignificant. BTW, I'm using H2O cooling, if that matters:).

Why wouldn't you go with the 5:4 ratio? You only lose 2% performance in comparison to 1:1 with equal FSB settings, and you'll easily make that up with the increased FSB.

I wish I still had a link to the place that gave me those facts, I think it was in AsusBoards or something, not really sure.

Is it true PAT doesn't work with 5:4? Thats lame, thats the only reason I went with an i875 over an i865!

We are running 5:4. I was calculating that there would be ~ a 2% performance hit @ 5:4 on this very forum before the boards were even out. Maybe that was where you saw it?

the performance percentages are in a full write-up posted by Zroc on both the Hocp "Strictly Intel" and Xtremesystems.org forums.
Unfortunately I can't get either page to load right now but here are the forum links:

Xtremesystems

Hocp

The write-up also contains multiple benches comparing the P4 800FSB to the new Athlon and a whole bunch of other benches and comparisons. Really in-depth and well worth reading

Just wondering how the new IC7 bios compared to these results, if you feel like running them again ? :)
