With their move to cater to something above the "look, flat is good!" mentality it's oh so disappointing that I went in to look at TVs this weekend. Something along the lines of a 65/73" TV.

Frantically looking around all I see are small/flat TVs. Yanking a blue shirt guy aside with the simple question - "I want to see the best TVs you have in the store. Minimum requirements are 65", 1080p"

"we don't carry those"

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!! Only words out of my mouth are "you have got to be kidding me?" Sorry for the rant, but I wanted to buy a TV this weekend and realize yet again why to avoid best buy.

Best Buy doesn't cater to higher end customers. They're the wal-mart of electronics stores.

Well, Fry's usually has a decent selection of very large hdtvs for decent prices.

If you don't care about getting the "best deal", you could probably check out specialty big screen stores.

The typical consumer electronics stores cater to just those kind of people - the typical consumer. They don't offer anything special to people who have niche tastes in ANYTHING - gaming, music, sound systems, computers, HD, etc etc.

there aren't Magnolias inside your best buys? 1/2 the stores around me have Magnolias in side. I would go there, they'll be 10x better than the blue shirts.

If you ask me, the best research is done on your own. Check out specs and prices online, only go the a store to see the set in person. No matter what the specs say if the picture doesn't look good in person to you don't buy it.

I am sorry but it sounds like you were an ass in this situation. Best Buy has and always will cater to its largest customer. They do not have infinite floor space and they do not want to lose tons of money on floor models. Therefore, they tend to put a midsize floor model out to

a. Minimize loses from putting a 70" out there
b. Show the most popular model

If people want something larger, unfortunately, they are going to have to say "Hey, heres the 50" version...the 70" version will be....bigger". It's not ideal but they can't put every size of TV out and you expecting them to do so is unrealistic.

Why did you even ask them anything? You know they don't know what they're talking about. Let me give you my experience today...

I just got back from Best Buy and was checking out cameras. I was standing there looking to see if they had the Canon SD800 IS yet, but I just found out it doesn't come out 'til Nov 10th. :( Anyway, the guy said, "that Sony is really nice. It has quite a few ISO levels to choose from too." Me not being familiar with the model asked, "does the camera produce alot of noise at higher ISO levels?" He responds, "no, it's pretty quiet." WTF?

So based on your post... it sounds like they aren't trying to capture the higher end customers...

I went back to best buy the other day around closing to return/replace my wirless bridge (fried) and the original rep who I had run into last time was there. He told me he was surprised I had problems with linksys and asked how I was using it. I told him about my home setup and his jaw just hit the floor. He then related a story to me about how he had had a low end Radeon fail on him and how he was steering people away from all ATi low and mid-shelf products. We ended up having a nice conversation in which I gave him a few examples of when low and mid-shelf 3d cards might be useful (HT-PC's etc). In the middle of our discussion, another rep came over and told me that I was stupid for wanting to buy an AGP card when I can have the same DUAL AGP THAT'S IN THE PS3 IF blah blah blah. I ripped him a new asshole (I had been having a rough night) and the guy just kept babbling off nonsense until I had to walk away from him. The original rep yelled his thanks for my explaining things to him, but I was in absolute disgust at the latter of the two reps.

By and large, blueshirts are useless.

You're probably talking about this guy. And yeah, that's about the highest end plasma you can get. Best Buy has some pretty good stuff, but the trick is, you don't ask the sales staff ANYTHING. Something dumb is bound to come out of their mouths.

Ah, you probably saw this one. But the 50" Pioneer is the top of the line. Bigger is not always better. ;)

And yeah, $10K is WAY out of my budget too. :(
