holy shiat! calls to South Korea are $0.06/min!?!

whoa, i'm going to have to tell my folks about this.

any caveats to VOIP? they currently have comcast cable internet.

btw, i thought i heard somewhere that VOIP was going to be heavily taxed by the gov't soon, making it nearly as expensive as normal phones. is that true?

Or you could pay 2.8 cents/min without switching to Vonage.

PM me your AIM/MSN.

ygpm 🙂

I was going to put it behind the router, but Vonage says that's bad. Not sure about the RJ11 patch system, but if you disconnect the main line, plug it into any phone jack, it makes them all live.

It's one of their "recommended configurations"

You just have to forward a truckload of ports to it, which a lot of n00blars can't do.

Ahhh..gotcha. Well, I asked for help with that in networking but I really got no help. I was told because I mentioned BT, that none of the "experts" would reply.

I'm starting to dislike vonage. For some reason, they block any phone calls to INS or various other government 800 phone numbers. They never gave me a clear answer on why and haven't addressed the problem as of yet.

Really? I haven't heard of that. Why would they do that? Are you sure it's "blocked", or the call won't connect for some reason?

Their tech support guys told me themselves that the numbers are blocked. They couldn't tell me why though. It's a pain because you're usually on hold for about 30-40 minutes when calling the INS help line and that uses up your cell phone minutes real fast.

Weird. Well, I don't have any need to call INS or the government for that matter, so that's cool. I wonder why they block them? There has to be a reason.

Do you need to call INS a lot?

Currently I do since my wife's case is still pending. As soon as they let me know anything, I'll post it in this thread. I complained about it over a month ago and this is the response I got back today:

Until the issue is resolved, I have a list of local INS #'s that you
can call. If you would like, I can give you the local # closest to
where you are located.

If you have any further questions, please contact us at 1-Vonage-help.

I emailed him back requesting the phone numbers but they're going to be useless since they're for the local offices. They always refer me to the 800 number for any questions.

Cool. Is it mostly INS? You mentioned other government 800 numbers?

Sorry to hear you are having trouble with that. 🙁

I think for most people it's probably a non-issue though.

I have vonage and use it with Verizon 1500/384 DSL. I know they recommend putting the vonage box first but it isn't necessary. I stuck it behind my D- Link router (DI-614+) and it works fine WITHOUT any special port forwarding.

Also, do not just connect the vonage box to your regular phone outlets while your normal phone line is attached in the box going into your house. It carries voltage and can fry the vonage box. It will work plugging in to your normal phone jack (that is getting the signal to the other jacks in your house) but you have to disconnect physicaly from the phone companys network first or fry your vonage box.

This is information I had aquired while researching vonage for my own home....I didn't actually fry my vonage box first. I don't connect to my normal phone jacks anyway as we just use wireless phones going to the base station that is connected to my vonage box then through a Linksys WET11 wireless bridge to my router. Works great.....like some people say ya get minor glitches once in awhile but not a big problem.

Old thread

faZZter-

Thanks, I learned about that earlier from Amused's earlier thread. Around here, and from what people tell me, I guess it's uncommon in most areas of the country, I have a basement. The phone lines are underground, and the actual box is in the basement near the circuit breaker box. I unplugged the main line coming in before I hooked it up.

That's also some good info on the Vonage box, I'll have to try and hook it up behind the Linksys and see what happens. I'm looking into getting a higher end Linksys VPN router in the future anyhow, so I'll probably wait till then.

🙂
