Hello,

I am new to these forums and have noticed this is the place to post about help with builds (and get a very good response :D).

My budget is $1800 and I will need an HD monitor along with the computer itself. (Have mouse and Keyboard).

I want to be running on an Intel i7, have at least 8gb of ram (with the ability to add more up to probably 12 at some point) and will be using the computer for Starcraft II, WoW (Cataclysm when it come out), use of Autodesk and Adobe CS5, and rendering Mandelboxes.

I found a Gtx 470 (on the forums) for a sixty dollar reduction til thursday. Even if I don't get the rest of the pieces to build for three weeks would i be worth buying now?

Galaxy 70XKH3HS8GUX GeForce GTX 470 Video Card - 1280MB GDDR5, PCI-Express 2.0, Dual DVI, HDMI, SLI, DirectX 11
Current Price: $299.99 - $30MIR = $269.99
Price after $30 Coupon Code say4753 = $239.99
Coupon Code expires on 8/12

I don't much care what the case looks like as long as it is worth the price (good airflow, and spacious for parts).

RAM can be skipped out on (as in starting at 4-6gbs and upgrading later) if need be, but I've heard my budget is suitable.

Any advice would be very helpful.

Do you live by microcenter?

Superhot deal on that vidcard.

As for the monitor I'm a huge fan of the Dell U series, as they're very nice IPS panels but not for ridiculous sums of professional ones. Are you looking for a single or dual (potentially tri?) monitor setup?

How adverse are you to an AMD build (though your probably have the budget for a nice i7 build+monitor). Do you need an OS? Will you be overclocking?

I'm looking for a single maybe later I'll consider going dual.

I am pretty averse to AMD builds, I prefer Intel. I will in fact also be needing Windows 7 64 bit.

I will definitely be overclocking :D

Microcenter?

An X58 build has 6 memory slots so it shouldn't be a problem with 2gb sticks.

Yeah sorry I was trying to figure that out while I responded. Yeah I do live by one.

Just noticed the thread for helping you help us so here.

PLEASE when you POST threads asking for input on system builds tell us...

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

Games: Starcraft II, WoW, Diablo III, FFXIV

Programs: Autodesk and Adobe CS%

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

$1800

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

USA

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.

Intel Fanboy no other preferences

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

N/A

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

Nothing conclusive to helping me.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

Yes. Will need advice on that as I am fairly nubular, but I have been led to believe Intel has a program to help you.

8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with.

1080p

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?

Less than a month

10. Don't ask for a build configuration critique or rating if you are thin skinned.

That PSU looks good.

Yeah I would consider open box. My only reserve is a quiet defense (sorry went to a rush concert last night). As long as it works and the price makes it favorable I wouldn't mind.

Samsung f3 terabyte 75$

Although there is a decently rated Hitachi deskstar for 60$.

20$ lightscribe dvd burner.

Some decent openbox motherboard deals. (at the bottom)

G.skill 6gb kit for 140$ after code EMCYWZY82

I'm partial to the Antec 900, but the Haf 932 full tower is larger and of comparable quality for 30$ more. Both have good airflow/build quality.

Alright cool thanks.

I'm hoping to go to Micro Center later today.

I should be looking at their Gtx 470 deals?

Sure, but I doubt they'll have a price lower. Check out their other deals on videocards though if something seems out of line (460 1gb@230, 470@300, 5870@400, etc).

Well, the discount is 150$ including MIRs. The CPU is 90$ more expensive, the mobo 20$, PSU 15$, hard drive 20$, so it's not a whole lot cheaper than each seperately. The PSU has worse efficiency and is only 100 watts larger, while the aircooler may be overpriced.

It's certainly not bad, and if it wasn't for the microcenter deal it'd definitely be great. I hate to say this, but I'm unsure about it.

I don't know if it's worth going open box on a motherboard, as it's the most important component in your system and the last thing you want to have issues with.

So I have been talking to a family friend who recently built his own computer and we thought for fun we would take a look at making a build and this is what we got. (I was partial to Intel since I have grown up using it but I really don't care which I use)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.470501

$500

this is the monitor ive been eyeing

http://www.frys.com/product/6206300

$180

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listi...&condition=new

$128

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...UNG-_-22152185

$60

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...noCjC7SDoCiSIi

$240

antec 932 case

$130

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...D=3332167&SID=

$20

Windows 7

$200

RAM

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...+ECC+PC3+10600

$300 -- Maybe find a cutback here to 6gb thats kinda expensive for now and i can upgrade later

this build puts me at 1760 without cooling pretty good but i think scaling back the RAM will put us into a place where i can get decent cooling

any thoughts?

Sorry, but that's a pretty bad build.

The 1090T and Crosshair IV are both bad values. This combo is half the price and and 90% of the performance.

That monitor seems pretty expensive for only 21.5". This ASUS is cheaper and bigger.

That PSU is very expensive for what it is. Here's a combo of 650TX and the Samsung F3 1TB for less than the price of that PSU.

The RAM is also very expensive for what it is. It's also registered and ECC, which you don't need. Here's an 8GB kit for $180

Do you know of any good combos with an i7 (perhaps 930?)

I like that monitor

The psu combo seems like a great deal

what does it mean that the RAM is registered and ECC?

any ideas for cooling?

Microcenter savings on the 930 will outweight almost any combo you could find.

That XFX PSU you listed earlier is like 100$ at Newegg AR. It's a very nice unit (seasonic OEM), but for quite a bit less. Mfenn's suggestion is another personal favorite of mine :/ Tough call with that combo deal.

Those basically only apply to server/military applications where a flipped bit could be fatal. In desktop terms it means much more expensive and worse performance.

Cooling should definitely be air cooling, check the cooling forums for a list of stickied coolers at various price points.

gtx 470 $240 referred to earlier

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...D=3332167&SID=

optical drive $20 referred to earlier

windows 7 $200 microcenter

need cooling for this

in order parts are

monitor, case, mobo, cpu, ram, gpu, psu + hdd, drive, os

That build looks good with the exception of the ram and windows.

What are you doing spending 200$ on windows? Just get home premium for 99$ unless you have a specific reason for ultimate.

Ram is theoretically fine, but X58 is a triple channel platform, and those ram sticks are dual channel. It's not a huge deal, but you could get 3*2gb sticks of basically the same ram and save some cash. Either way it's probably fine, but the 4gb sticks are just an added 20$ over 2GB.

If you think you'll need more than 12gb of ram at some point for photoshop or cad or something, then get the 4gb sticks.

Another note, the GTX 470 deal died 4 hours ago :/ Still 270$ isn't bad, but it's no longer as awesome as it was before.
