Have a freezer, it's a few years old. It was full of food (400 pounds). The dog unplugged it. It worked great up until it was unplugged; went undiscovered until liquid was coming out the door - opening the door, more liquid poured down the front.

After cleaning it, plugged it in. It no longer comes on. Think this is an easy electronics fix? I noticed a 13-14 cu ft freezer on sale at kmart/sears for $350; I could just replace it, but if it's a simple tweak, it would be foolish not to try. But, I'd guess the sale is over this weekend; and I wouldn't have parts in until it was back up to $500.

Thoughts?

What is a few years old? If it's less than 5, I'd probably fix it. If it is more than that, I'd lean towards replacing it.

Ok, I'll ask it - how exactly did the dog unplug the freezer?

Freezer was in a corner, the cord came out just to the side of the freezer. I suppose I'm speculating that it was a dog. Could have been a ghost, perhaps a very localized seismic disturbance, etc. Orrrr, maybe a cat is trying to frame the dogs.

Yeah, Krazy, it's about 5 years old; if it were 10 or 15, I wouldn't even hesitate. Clean as a whistle (now), no scratches. I suppose that even if I'm not successful in fixing it, there will be another sale before I get a deer. My side-by-side freezer is just getting a little bit too full at the moment (zero space left) as a result of "harvest season." In the past week, I've put in about 30 pounds of blackberries, a lot of blueberries, and the garden has a ton of stuff that's going to need to be picked and frozen soon.

I lost an entire butchered deer in my freezer after a really bad storm knocked out power for a week :(

I suppose the water would be what damaged it? Maybe take it outside in the sun and let it dry out

Maybe the freezer wasn't working before it was unplugged and the dog smelled thawed meat.

freezers are pretty simple beasts. First thing I'd do is get to the compressor. Does it vibrate at all or warm to the touch when plugged in? (even when it's not cooling)

then there are other steps. I learned my freezer repair at http://fixitnow.com/
